Jonas M's issues :)

Hey Coaches,

In the HIM training plan before the long rides we always run for 30 min. first.  Is that just for warm up purposes?  Or does the low level run before the bike serve another purpose?  The reason I ask, being a new guy to triathlons as I finish some of these long rides I often wonder how the heck I'm going to run 13.1 miles afterwards image.  Maybe just means I'm going to hard on the bike (or at least for where I'm at right now), but I'm anxious to run after getting off the bike to see how it feels, wondered if I'd be screwing anything up if I did the 30 min. run after the bike.

Thanks,

Jonas McCluskey

  • @Jonas - the idea behind the effort on the long rides is to place a certain amount of stress on your body so it will adapt.  That way when you get to your race you will be able to achieve that same level of stress, but it will be spread across a swim, bike and run.  When you race, you will not ride your bike at the same intensity that you do for a bike only workout.

You may have doubts at this stage.  However, that is what your Race Rehearsals are for.  They will show you that if your follow the race execution guidance, that you can finish the race with no problems and feel good at the end of the race.

  • Please read this and this other blog article to understand our views on brick runs.

  • ...and you build your run endurance in allll of the other runs across your week, especially the long run, not via the length of a brick run.
  • Coaches,

I have my first race of the year planned for this Saturday; it’s just an Olympic distance to get me into the season so I’m not sure how much I should adjust my schedule.  Should I just stick to my normal plan I have laid out this week (see below), but take Friday off to rest before race?

Mon. – Bike 56 mile race rehearsal w/ Brick Run.

    Tue. – Swim.

    Wed. – Bike.

    Thu. – Run. Swim.

    Fri. – Rest?

    Sat. – Race.

  • Yep, that looks good.
  • Coaches,

Is there a standard protocol for how to handle the few days after a HIM?  I'm ready to get back to work, but not sure exactly how aggressive to be these first few days?  First HIM was ran this past Sat. 6/9/13, finished in 5:12.  Right foot and calve some pain / soreness, but other than that I'm good.

    Thank you,

    Jonas McCluskey

  • Do you have anything looming on your schedule?
