Integrating a Sprint race into HIM training

I have a local sprint race in a couple weeks. It is a local race, which is very important to me, and even though it is a sprint, I'll call it an "A" race since I'll be racing in front of lots family and friends and want to hit it out of the park. My two "big" races for the season are both HIM's, one in July and other in August. How do I integrate this sprint in without compromising training for my HIM's? I'd like a slight taper so my legs are well rested for this race so I can really go all out, but hate to miss any important training. This race also falls the same week I am transitioning from GF to my actual HIM plan. Any ideas out there?

  • End of GF = perfect timing! "Taper" for a Sat sprint, do your last bike and run interval wkos on Tue/Wed. Swim on Thurs, and take bike out for a shake down cruise Fri, along with short run including 4-6 strides. Practice transitions on Fri as well...seconds matter!

Race day warm up is MORE critical for a sprint than longer distance tris. I go in reverse order ... About 5-8 min easy run ending with 4-6 30 second strides, then 5-10 min bike ending with some hard spurts. Trust your training, and ignore any feelings of tiredness/soreness as the run starts.

  • @Al - exactly what I'm looking for! I like the plan and will try it. Never did a warmup before a sprint (except for a quick swim), but considering how I never feel "up to speed" until I warmup for my bike/run training, this is a good idea. Thanks a bunch!
