Testing Week Results - VO2 vs FTP

Hi Coach P,

This is my first post to a forum, so I hope I'm using the correct one for this topic.

I completed my first power based testing on the bike EVER and am confused by the results.

My VO2 results (Computrainer) are as follows:

5 MIN, 1.92 Miles, 22.9 MPH, AVG HR 163, AVG PWR 262

My FTP results (Computrainer) are as follows:

20 MIN, 6.9 Miles, 20.7 MPH, AVG HR 155, AVG PWR 200

So, my question/confusion is whether there should be such a large gap between the two? I know I am a little bit fatigued still from racing a week and half ago and I believe that is playing into the results a bit but I was surprised to see such a gap.

Thanks!

Brent

  • Brent, there is often a learning curve regarding pacing, ability to suffer, etc when it comes to these tests, especially indoors. I'm sure some of _that_ explains the gap between those numbers. As you get better at testing the numbers will improve.

I'm going to move this to the Power and Pace Forum so you can get additional feedback from the team.
  • Brent, I'm new also and my gap is very similar. I'm better at suffering for 5 minutes, versus 20 min. As time goes by, you will read ways to get your Vo2 about 120% of FTP. I seem to have more ups and downs, good and bad days on FTP, but can always push myself on the Vo2. We will get stronger in the FTP portion I believe as we progress. Work is work though and you will get stronger as you train according to your test numbers, so don't be alarmed. Great first test by the way!
  • I saw a similar result on my first (ever) bike test - which was indoors on my trainer. What I found was the FTP was about right and that using 120% for the VO2 worked well for me. In your case, I'd probably use the 260 for the VO2 workouts. If the timing works out, test again in a few weeks.
  • Thanks for the feedback! Appreciate it. I just picked up a Quarq Riken PM for my bike so I'm looking forward to having power off the computrainer! 20 Week HIM program, here we go...
