Swim Coaching in SoCal
Hi Everyone. I'm new to the site and new to the sport. I am doing my first sprint tri this weekend but am planning to do an Olympic in September. I live in the Los Angeles area and was wondering if anyone knew of a good swimming instructor in the area? I am currently working with a swim coach in Irvine but she suggested that I take a couple lessons from another coach just to get a fresh set of eyes on me. I am 37 years old and started trying to swim as an adult about 3 months ago. Over the last two months I have been swimming 3-4 days per week and have taken private lessons in the total immersion style of swimming. I have also purchased the newest TI video and gone through most of the drills in that. I have also gone through the swim e-book. Sadly after all of this unless I have a wetsuit or a pull bouy I have a hard time swimming over 100 meters without taking a break. My coach calls me the incredible sinking man. My legs/hips drop very quickly so I end up doing a big kick that tires me out and slows down my forward progress. If anyone knows of any good coaches in the area or other good resources please let me know. I am willing to spend the time and money but I'm beginning to wonder if I am just trying to make a brick float.
Thanks,
Brandon

I don't want to start a holy war here but suffice to say, Total Immersion can be a bit of a touchy subject for some. I'm sure it has worked wonders for some, but it's not the be-all, end-all approach to swimming.... so yes, a fresh set of eyes and a fresh perspective aside from TI might be beneficial!
Unfortunately, I'm a little too SoCal for you guys, but I highly recommend Trevor King @ Energy Lab Training in Encinitas CA for swim coaching if anyone is further south. I wouldn't drive all the way down from LA though, I'm sure there are plenty of options more local, including as Dino said, coach Rich.
All: my clinic is on Saturday, June 29th
Registration is here.
If you're looking for more/additional 1:1 help, I recommend you get in touch with Michael Collins of Nova Aquatics. Tell him I sent you, we go way back.
