Kimmyd's Macro Stuff

I'm focusing on SC this year.  (See plan below).  I plan on doing the Hartford Half Marathon Oct. 12.  I've done it the past 3 years and kind of just "winged it" in terms of training by just building up my longest run in conjunction with my tri training.  I'd like to focus on it a bit more (cuz my run sucks) so when should I start and what should I do in terms of my overall season plan, and for the HM?  The Bridgeport Oly can drop in priority but would still like to nail the Women's Sprint in Sept.  Thanks!

  • Recommend you train per the season plan through the Bridgeport race. The GF long run is very half-marathon-esque and you could add a little volume to the long run if you wanted.

Then after the race load up the Run Focus training plan to end on the half marathon, bumping up the volume of the long run. That said, we may have half marathon running training plans by the September rolls around so no need to do the RF plan, you can do this half marathon plan instead.

  • OK, I'm already thinking about next year since depending on the race, I may need to think about travel arrangements/registration soon. Here's my goal: Lake Placid 2015. I had been thinking I'd go back to FL in 2015 but LP is better logistically so I better start embracing hills now!

    Here's what I'm thinking for 2014:
    June 1- Quassy Oly
Lake Placid training camp late June (a local tri club here does one) so I can see how it will be BEFORE I register
    Aug.- Timberman 70.3
Oct. Hartford Marathon (first full open marathon)

    Thoughts/suggestions?
  • Looks good but consider an early spring '14 half marathon to serve as an OS goal for you. You know that we're also not too keen on marathons but that Oct date isn't so bad if you're planning on doing the Jan'15 OS.

  • Hmmmm, maybe the oct marathon isn't a good idea cuz in looking at the Master season plans, IMLP looks like nov. OS vs Jan. that's not a must have... Just thought it might be a good idea as my run needs work. Maybe I'll stick with the half Mary in oct. and add one in the spring too. Thx!

  • Got it.

Last question.... Maybe. In terms of doing IMLP camp in June 2014 vs a HIM like IMMT 70.3 as a "test"/prep for IMLP in 2015, what are your thoughts? I'd like some indication I could complete IMLP before I register and since I was so close to the cutoff at IMFL (16:30), doing a HIM around 7:00 would make me feel better, but riding the actual course would really let me know what I'm in for.... Really more mental than anything else and I would do the camp in 2015 anyway....
  • It's always very, very valuable to get out and train on the course you'll be racing so I would recommend that over racing a HIM, especially since the IMLP camp is 1x/yr but you have several opportunities to race a half...if that makes sense.

  • Hypothetically, if I couldn't wait til 2015 to do another IM and wanted to do IMFL in 2014 and then Placid in 2015, would the 2013 season and most of 2014 doing short course prior to IMFL, be enough to get me some speed before attempting full IM again. And what would it look like, season planning-wise going from IMFL in Nov. to Placid July 2015? Would I feel like I never stopped training for an IM? (Don't want to burn myself out) I want to be smart about any decisions I make, not just succumbing to "IM Fever" without thinking things through. Doing IMLP in '14 would be nice except that ony gives me this year + 2014 OS to get faster and have a respectable finishing time on a challenging course.

Sorry for the ramlbing, but I figured since you're flying, you've got time to kill. image

To put a date in your head, I'm dropping the IMFL'13 people into their IM plans in early to mid August so imagine a season of OS / Focus Plan / Short Course / Get Faster jazz, with any races you want to do, through the end of July, call it. Then put on your point IM hat for 12wks.  And what would it look like, season planning-wise going from IMFL in Nov. to Placid July 2015? Would I feel like I never stopped training for an IM? If it were me, I'd give myself ~2-3wks of downtime after IMFL, then become a runner primarily through...end of Jan or so. Find a late Jan, early Feb half marathon. I say runner because it's the lowest time and logistics commitment. Then transition over to multisport stuff in early Feb through early May, which is when I dropped the IMLP folks into their IM plans this season. Or that running jazz could be extended through early March. The key is to keep your head entirely out of an "I'm training for IM" space from IMFL through early March.

  • Ok, I'm going to wait til IMLP '15 for next full. I'm signed up for Quassy Half for '14 and will plan to repeat for '15. Other than that, my next 2 seasons are a blank slate. So given that I finished IMFL in 16:29 and I still am in obvious need for some speed, what would u reco for '14 and '15 to finish IMLP, perhaps with a much more respectable time? Should I focus the back half of '14 on short course? Throw in a late season HIM like Timberman? I'm open!
  • See previous post above, plus one more thing... 9/8 is my last tri and then I'll be in Half Mary mode for Oct. 13. Do you think the marathon plans will be up and running on EN by then or should I plan on using the RF plan for Half Mary?
  • Notes:

    • Racing 10k, half marathons, short course triathlons, and HIMs all would be good tools for building speed. That is, build a solid, consistent, and challenging ~1:30 long run, 2.5-3hr bike (very hard).
    • Not sure about the half marathon training plans, timeline-wise, sorry. Getting those up, in the form of a single-sport membership, has a lot of moving parts, and PnI just have a lot on our plates right now. I'd say to expect to use the Run Focus plan and modify the length of the long runs to fit a half marathon.
