PSI issues on Race Wheels

I bought a new set of FLO 90's and I'm having an issue getting a good PSI reading when inflating the tires.  I'm using a set of zipp valve extenders on tubes with 60mm extenstions.  I've over inflated once already even though the pump is only reading around 50-60 psi and the tire feels more like 110 psi.  Does anyone have any suggestions or tricks that i should know of? I'm guessing i should go by feel instead of the pump reading.

  • I've never been able to get a good feel of what PSI a tire is by pushing on it...if that's what you mean by feel. I can tell a little bit by the harshness / softness of the ride. Short answer is that I recommend you use a guage but I've got no tips on how do that with a valve extender, sorry!

I highly, highly recommend using the second type of extender mentioned in the article.  Sounds like you're using the first type which are just tubes and, frankly, they suck.

  • From the ST article, looks like I was one of those angry uneducated customers. I tried everything for years with the zipp-branded extenders, and always had problems with the valve rattling shut - essentially making a re-pump impossible without removing the extender, somehow re-opening the valve via the hold in the deep dish wheel, reattaching the extender, and finally pumping.

I now use the latex tubes with removable valve cores and the extenders with the teflon tape. Problem solved!
  • Bob excellent link to a great article.
  • Yeah, I'm using the first Zipp extender pictured in the article. I'm having to hold the floor pump on the extender and pump with one hand because it keeps popping off. Then the PSI guage isn't reading accurately because the extenders aren't fitting the nozzle. I'll end up ordering the tubes with removable valve cores and some new extenders I guess.

  • Whatever the brand, the whole idea of using removable valve cores and extending the stems that way is clearly superior. Don't underestimate the value of plumbers teflon tape in making a good seal.
