Ironman Swim Start Protocols

http://www.ironman.com/triathlon-ne...z2TDYnxQ8e

As I understand it, WTC is instituting the following:

CDA, LP: Rolling start like a big city marathon - athletes should seed by swim time, then pass over a timing mat as quickly as those in front allow them to. Final time is based on chip time, not gun time.

Tahoe, Florida: Wider beaches, so no rolling start, but there will be a new, strong emphasis on getting swimmers to line up "in corrals" by expected swim time.

Mont Tremblant: Waves, check the link for details.

These are touted as three different pilots, so hopefully they will learn something from each, and reserve the right to make future modifications.

All others (Lou, TX, AZ, Wisc, Can) will remain as they have been in years past, so TT @ IMlou, in water start @ Madison, Tempe, etc. As to Whistler, it's a two loop in water mass start

Everyone has 17 hours to finish, based on gun or chip time, whichever is applicable

Oh, and swim is canceled if the water temp is not between 52 and 88F. Whoop de doo - even 58 is too cold for many slower swimmers, IMO.

  • I was under the impression that the start for LP is at 0630 and that Midnight is the cutoff. There is a huge string about this over at Slowtwitch. I see and have experienced both sides but I prefer the rolling start. No need to get my ass kicked before I get out of the water. it's a long enough day and I am really only racing myself anyways.

Cutoff will be 17 hours from the chip start.  For example, someone starting at 6:30am would need to finish by 11:30pm or they will be DQ'd.

  • This is from the www.Ironman.com website

"Age-group athletes will begin entering the water at 6:35 a.m. for IRONMAN Coeur d’Alene and 6:30 a.m. for IRONMAN Lake Placid, and will have the two hours and twenty minutes from the time the last athlete enters the water to complete the swim. An athlete’s time does not begin until he or she crosses the timing mat located below the swim arch. All athletes are expected to start by 7:00 a.m. at both venues, thus keeping all other timelines and cutoffs the same. This will ensure that all participants have at least the full 17 hours (subject to intermediate cutoffs) to complete the event."
