Using TSS Table for CdA

So I'm not 100% on how to apply the TSS Table to a hill(ier) course like CdA. My long rides have been at 170-175 watts, (FTP of 240 & 3.5w/kg and it feels fine. Coming off bike camp I feel like I'm due for an FTP bump, but I'll wait till that actually happens to adjust upward.

At the pancake flat b2b, I rode 173np watts for a 2:40 split.  My question is what bike split to use given CdA has some hills. Is it unreasonable to double my b2b and 30 minutes for hills? Or how do I come up with an expected bike split to use in this table?

If I'm reading this table completely wrong, please set me straight image Seems like if you're off on your expected bike split time at a given IF, you can put yourself in the yellow pretty quickly.

  • Brandon, I'm moving this post to the Race Execution Forum, where it will get more visibility
  • Brandon...start with the understanding that riding at a steady power level regardless of up or down slope effectively flattens out the course. Sothe presence of hills is not an issue, only how long it will take you to finish the 112 miles.

So how to guesstimate the time? Instead of using an HIM bike leg, why not use the race rehearsals you are doing? I found (on the previous CDA course) that I would go about 10-15 minutes faster on race day than in the final RR. IOW, i might go 108 miles in six hours in the RR, then go 6 hours for 112 miles race day. This assumes you were able to have a successful run in the RR.

The RR, especially the final one, serves several purposes:
-help you learn how to ride steady, low VI, for six hours.
    - practice race-day nutrition plan
    - confirm your race day power levels, basically by seeing if you can run @ race day pace for an hour after six hours of biking.
    - help you figure out what your expected bike split should be on race day.

If you end up doing a lot less than 112 miles in six hours in the RR, say 90-100, then you should just aim for an IF of 69% of your FTP on race day, after an initial 90 minutes @ 60-65%.
  • Interesting. I'm scheduled to have a RR this weekend, so that will work. Thanks!
