Help!: IMLP Fueling-Perform/Gels vs Perpetuem

So I've been using Perpetuem for a while now and have had decent success.  I had been planning to use two 3 hr bottles of Perpetuem on the bike (one in special needs, one on the seat tube) and ClifBlok and then go to perform and gels on the run.  After watching the Core Diet Webinar I'm rethinking my whole approach and considering going with Perform/Gels on the bike Perform/Gels/ClifBlok on the run.

Based on the webinar I've traditionally under-fueled and under-hydrated on the run and have not met my sodium requirements throughout the race (195lbs, high sweat rate, high salt content).

Do I make the switch now or stick with the Perpetuem for the bike and just ensure I increase my fluid/carb intake on the run and sodium intake throughout?

  • Joe,

We still have 10 weeks of long rides, including big days and two RR's prior to the IM so I think you have time to look at a nutrition switch.  Get the stuff and get on your plan this weekend though.  You can always fall back on you old nutrition if needed.

I'd go for more nutrition on the bike up to a certain point of course.  Increasing fluid/carbs on the run can be done but as the effort increase it gets harder to absorb the calories and we are definitely working harder on the run.

  • You definitely have enough time to switch and experiment. Know that it's easier to get ahead on calories on the bike, if it's challenging on the run.
  • Thanks guys. That was just one area that I didn't think I needed to worry about, and started to freak when I basically went to a clean sheet of paper. Started to implement the plan this past weekend on my long bike and actually felt much better at the end. Definitely less dehydrated than I usually am.
