Injury

Suffered a knee/hamstring injury about 7 weeks ago.  Babied it through the last 2 weeks of the outseason but didn't rest completely as I had a (hiking, not running) charity 100k event a week ago I was committed to.  Shockingly, I felt better after that race, but then went for a 12 mile run last Thursday and now my leg is worse than ever.  Can't run on it at all now (hurts just standing on it), can't bike either (at least not for long or with any intensity).  Making an ortho appointment today.

I have Vineman the last weekend in July.  I'm assuming best case I'm looking at a couple weeks of forced recovery starting today.  With T-9 weeks to go, I have to believe even showing up at the race is in jeopardy.  I don't mind going and having a long day of it, but it would be very disappointing having to drop out entirely.

I guess my question in all this is: at what point should I simply call the race not-doable and move on?

  • Let's wait to see what your doctor says before we put the horse down, so to speak :-) You have time, not much time, but time. And it's important to begin rethinking / adjusting your goals but, again, let's see what the doc says.
  • Dr Appt Wednesday morning. I'll keep you posted. Thanks!
  • Saw the Ortho today. I'm getting an MRI tonight and then have a followup next Tuesday. Until then I'm supposed to avoid anything high impact or which highly loads my hamstrings. I'm contemplating trying tonight's bike workout (though I probably can't do all of 10,15,20 @ FTP) then on Saturday doing last Saturday's ride (4 hrs @70% w 5x20' @80%) vs this weekends schedule (week 9 Big Day). I'm not going to run until I check back in with the Ortho.

How does that sound? Any differential advice?
  • If FTP work is too much, 80-85% instead would be good, but you need to listen to the hamstring
  • The ortho says it's a combination calf/hamstring strain and has sent me to PT.

I'm back on the bike (still having a hard time hitting my numbers, but just nagging soreness, not pain). I feel like my power numbers have seriously tanked while I was off the bike trying to recover. Instead of the 10,15,20 @ FTP I did 4x8 @FTP and it was hard.

Running is a bit of a different story. Kicking the pace faster than 8:00 miles (which is ~ MP for me) gets painful quickly.

Given all that I skipped testing this week and redid week 11. For my long run, I ended up doing all MP instead of HMP.

Any advice on what I could/should be doing differently?
  • Absolutely don't test, especially on the run, until you're at 100%. Continue to listen to your body and turn things down accordingly.
