Dellota Macro Thread -- FTP and Race Equipment

Just a quick question on FTP and bike set up. I was noticing that my power output during a race (aero helmet and wheels) was WAY easier than during training rides. Should I be doing my FTP testing in an aero helmet and wheels to get a more accurate FTP?

  • Kriss,

    Watts are lower?
    Feels easier?
You're going faster at the same watts?
    ?

Not sure I'm understanding your question. I'm going to move this to the Power and Pace forum where you'll get more eyeballs on it
  • Kriss, please remember that your FTP gives you a number to set your training zones and must be validated with training at those zones for "close to" race day durations. Testing with aero gear does not mean you can instantly sustain an IF of .75, .85 for 3-6 hours respectively for that new FTP. Only training at those IF's with a new FTP will do that. Yes aero enhancements make your old IF feel easier, Personally I feel I must earn the right to push a specific IF during RR's with my race set up. I start at my prescribed IF .75 IM, or .85 HIM and "if" during the last 30-60 minutes it still feels easy I push harder. This gives you a clearer picture of what IF you can race with in relation to the FTP you've been training most with. Hope this's answering your question.
  • I guess I need to clarify. I have been training many weeks at my current FTP. When I did a HIM at my goal pace of .85, it felt considerable easier than during my training rides. So much so, that I felt I did not push hard enough during the bike leg. I understand that aero or racing equipment (wheels and helmet) can make your usual watts feel easier. So - should we be doing our FTP testing in our aero equipment to get a better sense of our true FTP on race day?

That's the thing, it shouldn't feel easier. You should be pushing the same watts at the same RPE (feel) but probably going a little faster, due to the aero gear, and look a little funny(er) due to the point the helmet, etc .

    Sorry, still confused here?
