Nemo- IM Wk8- Int-Big Day when you can't run.

Hi there.  I currently have a knee issue that keeps me from running.  I have the Big Day on the schedule for this Saturday and I'm trying to figure out what my best option is for modifications.

I could do the swim & bike as scheduled and then walk for an hour (although walking isn't always great on this knee either), or

I could do the swim and bike longer than the scheduled 3.5 hours (maybe ride 4-5 hours- anything longer seems mind numbing), or

I could do something else entirely- like maybe make the whole weekend a "big bike block" since it's Memorial Day weekend and I'll have Monday off from work.

What do you think?  Some additional background- I did a Half IM Aqua Velo the weekend of 5/11 so I feel like I got some value from a 45 min swim followed by a 3 hour bike already (need to either get more comfy aero or change position- shoulders took a hit).

  • NEMO!!! So good to have you back and sorry I missed this yesterday. I say we go double bike weekend, with Monday for recovery. Maybe 4h on Sat and 3h on Sunday? As always, goal is to negative split with the last hour being your best hour. image

What's the plan on race day with the knee again?
  • Thanks- that sounds like a good plan for this weekend.

As for race day, ugh. Well, worse case scenario is I walk the marathon. I can walk 15 min miles and if I make the bike cutoff I'll have enough time to finish the marathon with more energy than ever before. But my hope is that I can rehab the knee enough to do at least a little running using a run/walk strategy (with a lot more walk than run). Oddly enough, I think I'll be ok running uphill- it's downhill that I think will be a problem. So unlike everyone else on the course, I'll be running up and walking down the hills of Mt Tremblant!

Trying to get an MRI scheduled so I can really know what I'm up against. Have been doing to good doobie rest/no run thing for 8 weeks now and there is very little improvement.

Oh- BTW- the "Run Jail" post in the Wiki doesn't seem to work.
  • Perfect, thanks!!!
