Help! My Edge 500 has lost my powertap.

I raced the Gulf Coast Triathlon on 11 May and my G3 Powertap worked flawlessly.   The next day I did not have any power readings so I assumed my battery had died.  I replaced it yesterday before going out on a long ride, but NO POWER!

When I go to settings for the power meter, the "Calibrate" function is in light gray font which I understand means it cannot find it.   Any ideas on what I need to do to get it working again?  I figure this must fall into the stupid user category, but I've changed the battery before so I don't know what to do.

  • Paul, here's an issue that I had. If you configure the Edge 500 for a device, and then the device is not present, this tends to throw it into a dither. I once configured mine for a speed-cadence sensor (which I apparently didn't have) and it ceased to sync up with my powermeter after that. Just a thought.
  • send Garmin tech support an email. They are really good at helping out.
  • Might be too simple of a thought.... But did you try simply having the 500 "search" for your powermeter again. particularly while you are turning the cranks and putting a little bit of power into it?
  • I have this problem frequently -- every time I turn my 500 "on" when I am away from my bike (for example when I am downloading/uploading data from the computer) the 500 searches for the candence sensor and powertap and does not find it so it turns them off

Simple solution is to confirm that it recognizes the ANT+ for both before I go for a ride - if it has turned them off I simply have teh device search for them and reconnect.  A little annoying but nothing that complicated.

  • At Brian and John - so how do you make the Edge search for it?
  • Here are the menu steps:

Settings > Bike Settings > Bike 1 (or what ever you have named the bike the powermeter is on) > ANT+ Power

Power Meter Present? - if it reads No switch to Yes and then select Search below - make sure to pedal so that the PM is transmitting data

If this does not solve your problem - would try Garmin Customer Service

  • Fixed!! Turns out that the replacement battery I put in was no good. I went out and bought another CR2032 and it lit right up. I am back in business. Thanks for all the advice.
