Tom’s Ironman Texas Recap - Executive Summary

Still pulling together thoughts.  Race report coming in a few days.

·      Ironman #10

·      Hardest/hottest/darkest yet

·      Finished in 11:11, 7th in age group out of 157; 208th overall out of 2,842. Swim 1:28, bike 5:14, run of 4:14 and transitions of 7 minutes

·      Mixed results in swim; not as fast as hoped for, but top half the field and not out of the mix for the first time ever

·      Bike was stronger but slower than previous years.  More wind this year and a flat at mile 100 cost 7 minutes.  Temperature reading on my computer hit 97 degrees

·      Run was all about holding on and fading away. Hoped for 8:00 min/mile pace quickly faded to 11 min/miles.  All about mental focus.

·      Drank regularly and still dropped 10+ pounds on the day

·      Thought I finished 20-30th in my age group, so very happy to finish top 10 again

·      All my family out to cheer me on during the day, so great fun and motivating to see the cheering section on a regular basis

·      A week of rest, relaxation and recovery coming up!

  • So proud of MY Tom!!! You are the most humble athlete I know. Always looking at the bright side of things. THE BEST training partner ever. Congratulations on IM #10 and surviving your most difficult one to date based on conditions.

Now let's help you put back on those 10 pounds!!

  • Congrats.    Agree with the tough day.    Good to see you out there and run a bit with you.      Upwards next year.
  • Big congrats Tom! Solid improvement on your swim this year- even if it isn't exactly the number you were hoping for.
  • Thanks for sharing and looking forward to your full report....I'm sorry we didn't get a change to chat more in TX...as I said to Tim...its been great to share the Training/Prep with this IMTX group!...hope to see you back next year

  • Tom, Congrats on the swim improvement this year. Dont understand why that is a hard swim but it is! Bummer on the flat.... Look forward to your RR and some more comparisons and comments from a 3 time IMTX vet!
  • Scariest thought: "Drank regularly and still dropped 10+ pounds on the day" Bottom line to me: some people's physiologies are better suited to heat/humidity than others. Training is involved to some extent, but genetics must play a big roll here.

7 minutes on the bike would have put you fifth on the day?

I'm sure you'll analyze the power numbers and run splits to get a better read on how your day went.

  • Wow! Ten ironman races is like being a double ace. At IMCOZ this year they had folks stand up who had done more than 1, then more than 5, more than 10 and so on. By the time they got to 10, there were only a handful. You are not only an elite performer, but you are now in a very elite group. I hope to join that group. Congrats on an excellent trudge. What's next?
  • @Tom IIRC you use cytomax and water...might be worthwhile getting over to IM Perform so you can drink like made on the course. I don't know your sweat rate, but on a day over 90 I have to drink 3 bottles an hour, usually for two hours, then I can dial back to two. 5 hour ride in Kona saw me take in 17 bottles of Perform....

On a positive note, really pumped for what you did on the swim!! Nice work brother!!!
  • @Patrick,

I am going to switch over to Perform going forward.

For your drinking, 3 bottles just seems like a ton of fluids. Do you have any issues getting that all down? Is it a practice thing or do you just have a large stomach? Tim C. tells me he was knocking back about 1 bottle an hour at TX, I'm drinking 2 and you at 3. He weighs in at 117, me mid 150s and you - more image.

Is it sweat rate, body weight or other factors - still thinking about it.

Also, lost a lot of weight, but not 100% sure it really mattered. Too much Tim Noakes reading I think!. My heart rate never spiked during the day so not sure overheating was an issue. Sure heat plays a huge role in speed, but my bike and run times were consistent with other top 10 guys. Could I have gone faster with better nutrition? Not sure.

Needed to walk through aid stations to get fluids and calories in. If I front ened loaded calories more, could I have run through the stations or was it simply the heat telling me to slow down?

Anyway, as you can probably tell from this rambling message, I'm still not quite sure to make of my nutrition plan.
