Latest IMTalk w/ Gordo -- "Speed" work on bike
Need to re-listen to it again on the drive home but he mentioned a few things that have always echoed in my head.
1. There CAN be up to a 10-20% difference between a reported FTP via a 20' test and the true 60' power. Repeated 20' tests CAN make you a good 20' tester and that doesn't necessarily correlate to LC triathlon. His suggestion is more sessions that focus on 60-120' of sustained effort (certainly not all at 100%).
2. You know you can benefit from threshold work if your top end speed is HIM effort/speed.
3. A rough rule is power drops 10% as race doubles. That seems to jive with the guidance we use (for slower folks 95% for Oly, 80% for HIM and 70% for IM).
4. Many people have a large delta between climbing and flat FTP. It takes concerted effort to raise the flat course FTP (climbing probably ridden on drops and flat on the bars).
5. 40K TTs are killers mentally so 30K is a good test (closer to a 30-40' effort).
I might have missed a few things but thought it was worth a listen. Easy for me with a 1h10min commute each way
