Vittoria open triathlon evo

Anyone ever try these tires.  About time to buy new tires for my A race.  These look pretty similar to the open corsa evo cx - but a little narrower.

  • What wheels are you going to pair them with?

A big thing with the tubular version of the Triathlon evo was that it had a butyl tube so you could pump it up and leave it in transition over night, how generous.

Since the 'open' implies you are looking at the clincher version and can pair it with a latex tube, I don't really know what the significant difference is between the Corsa Evo and the Triathlon evo, both are 320 TPI, I'd suspect maybe different tread patterns and the Tri version and that it comes in a 22m version instead of the 20mm or 23mm in the open corsa evo cx.

The reason I ask about your wheel choice is that the claims about improved aerodynamics of the 22mm width seem dubious at best when 23mm tires have tested exceptionally well (aerodynamically) on the latest generation of wide aero rims.

So I suppose what I'm really getting at is that you should probably get 23mm Conti GP 4000S instead image

  • Trevor - I have flashpoint 60 wheels, which are non dimpled zipp 404's. I've used the Vittoria Open Corsa Evo for several years, and have been quite happ with them. But the triatlon version is a cheaper on ebay, and 1mm narrower. The support folks at zipp told me a 21mm tire would save approximately 2 watts for the front tire, and something less for the rear tire. Since I ride a kestrel airfoil pro, I would probably get roughly the same benefit for both tires. Not a lot, but free speed is free speed. I just don't know anything about the triathlon version of the tire. Certainly doesn't make sense to pick up a couple of watts and end up with a flat or less comfort. I have actually not considered the conti. Maybe I should look at them.
  • Bob,

The conti's tested exceptionally well on the latest generation of wide aero wheels, such as the Firecrest Zipps, C2 HEDs and FLO wheels. I believe Zipp's own testing also recommended the GP4000S .

However, the FP60 wheels are based on the older narrower rim profile and have historically always tested better with 20 or 21mm tires. For your specific wheels, I would not recommend the 23mm GP4000S.
