Casey Can't Go Injury Free for one Season

Coaches.

Here I am - 90 days from IM Canada and haven't been able to do much since torn meniscus on April 24.

I was in week 16 or 17 of Half Iron plan (intermediate) when this occured.

Had surgery May 6.

Three computrainer rides of 30-45-60 minutes respectively week of 5/20.

First outdoor bike yesterday 5/26 - 30 miles about 1:40 (didn't want to push too hard yet).

Anticipating being cleared to run wiithin the next 7-14 days.

I need help. Where should I begin on a scheduled training plan?

( torn hammie 2 weeks prior to IM WI (2012), bulging disk 6 week pre IM FL (2011)

  • Casey, you should post to the macro forum and get Coach Rich's input. My suggestion would be to immediately set your plan for Ironman Canada on the beginner level and get started if you get the clearance. If everything goes well for four weeks, change it to the intermediate level. Most important, don't reinjure yourself.
  • What Paul said. That said, I'd sit tight for now until you're cleared to run by your doc and then you'll need to be very, very careful with starting back up.

  • Thanks.

Rich - since I am okay to go on the bike, what might you recommend to start re-buliding endurance?

  • You may find yourself able to sorta-jump right into the scheduled riding, might need to dial down the length of the long rides a bit depending on how you feel. That is, cycling fitness comes back very quickly and you are at very low risk of injuring yourself if you are a bit aggressive with how quickly you ramp up the bike training.
