Short Course 27 May - 2 June

Alright! Happy Memorial Day to all! Be sure to thank a Veteran for their service!

Today's swim was a very pedestrain pace at my sub-division SCY pool. My pace was the same as I normally do at the SCM pool at work. But, hey, I got the work in and glad I at least did it! image

Working on SC week #13 and it is the week before my next test week. So, it is time to get some good rest to absorb all that good training! image

Hope everyone is training well and getting ready for some good races this summer to highlight your great EN training! image

  • SC week intermediate week 12.
Out of town all weekend so Long ride today.
    Went pretty well.

Swim with coach in the AM. That will hurt.

    Have a great week team!
    Happy Memorial Day
  • In week 19 of the SC. Weather.com said 0% chance of rain from 6:00 - 7:30 for this morning's run. Great news because over the past few days the rain here in SE Wisconsin has been relentless. So of course, it rained the entire 5.5 mi run, which included 4x90" @ Z5. The rain was rather hard a few times. Can't even trust Weather.com!
I have my 1st Triathlon of the year this Sunday - its a classic Sprint distance in Lake Mills, WI
So I did a couple T1 & T2 rehearsals yesterday - no matter how many times I've done these, it's still easy to screw them up. Need more practice. I even ran this morning without socks and ended up with rain-soaked shoes.
  • @Jim - I forget how lucky I have it here in the hot drought land of South Texas as a triathlete! Best of luck this weekend at the local triathlon! Working on transitions is a great way to taper. I have shaved anywhere from 1-2' by putting my bike shoes on my bike and dismounting barefoot at about 6-7mph.

    @Ralph - smart self-coaching! Safe traveling!

Yesterday was a bail out on the 3X1'(1') and 2 X 20'(4') all at Z4. I made it to the 9' mark on the first 20' and basically broke it up @Z4 with as much rest as I needed and just ended up cutting it short. Did the 45' run later in he da more at Z2 than the Z2/3 as prescribed. Just tired.

Today after some good sleep, I managed to make my targets for the 3 X 1mi (4") @Z4 and then put in a good swim workout of 2500m during lunch. The swim was about 2-3" slower per 100m, but I felt it was a strong workout. So, whatever I am going through, it seems as though rest is what I need!

If tomorrow's bike workout goes well, I'm thinking about doing the local 41K Bike TT this Saturday in-lieu of the next week bike test on the trainer. We'll see.
  • My how the week starts out looking great and falls on the rocks so fast...

Tuesday's swim with the coach was 400 with 15 sec of treading water with hands out of the water every 50.

Next 200 with 30 sec of treading water per 50, last 100 with 1 min treading water per 50. total 1850

    That was a challenge.

Wed Am I noticed a slight sore throat and runny nose. Tried to do my 60 min with 1 mile zone 4/5 x 3 and that was a bit of a bust. made it about 4.5 miles.

Today, full blown snotty nose and cold symptoms. gonna take a pass today and try to go hard tomorrow.

as my wife would say Wah, Wah, Wah.

First Race Fathers day. Told my kids that their gift to me was to get up at 5 Am and be my support team.

They said they would rather get me a card

    Teenagers....

Sounds like the rest of you guys are going hard at it. Keep up the good work team.

I chuckled about this all last night. Great memories of my two girls at home!  Great post
  • So, on Wednesday I go to bed just way tired. I set three alarms, or so I thought, and go to bed. I wake up at 0630, two hrs late image , and think. Damn - there goes the workout, now I better haul ass to be at work in time for my 0800 teleconference.:0  Continuous meetings and subsequent phone calls and office visits and I bail out to come home at 3:30hrs. Not used to being home that early, and not used to having so much energy at the end of the day, I decide to hit the roads to get in my bike workout and avoid the scheduled drainer workout. Get in a good 36mi bike and declare victory. image

So, today is a swim workout during lunch. Hopefully this will go as scheduled! Like Ralph mentioned above, I plan each week so well and it eventually falls on the rocks! image
  • this cold is still kicking my butt. Tried to run a little but it is amazing how much it has affected my wind. Slowly getting back.

@Joe, I did the same thing but with Nyquil. DOH!

Early ride in the AM. Snot or not...
  • Today's quasi medical post deals with the performance enhancing effects of dayquil.

    In short there are none!

Tried to get in a short bike today since it is beautiful out and I was starting to feel better. Took a slug of dayquil for my runny nose and it really changed the character of my workout. Truth in advertising dictates that I mention that the poor showing may be entirely due to the cold effects but I still found it interesting.

I did the same short 10 mile loop that I always do, mostly flat except for a couple of bridges to go up. I was significantly slower in roadspeed (about 18 mph) but both my cadence and heartrate were through the roof. I spent 72% of the time in HR zone 4 or above. I didn't feel bad but I did feel like I was working much harder than usual.

In short, you probably would want to consider carefully before taking that on a race day. But as my wife would kindly point out... most normal people probably figured that out on their own. image
  • Great race today at Quassy! 19min PR vs. last year... and in hot n humid conditions! Totally psyched! Full report here: http://kimsironmanquest.blogspot.com/
  • Congrats Kim! Way to go. 19min PR in the heat is outstanding. Great RR too - thanks.

Ralph, hope you are feeling better today. Had a good chuckle on your Fathers Day request. Showed to my wife (who, by the way, is not getting up with me tomorrow at 4:00am for my 1st Tri of the year) and she said she could totally relate to your kid's response.

Joe - good job getting in the 36 miler after work. For work, I'm traveling to Seattle next week - I was initially worried it would screw up my race prep but it's the last week (week 20) of the SC and it's mostly winding down for the Saturday's Elkhart Olympic race - I'll do the running while I'm out there. Work needs to be worked-around sometimes.

I spent the day getting ready for tomorrow's Sprint Tri. Firsts require a lot more attention - as in, where did I put the body glide, race number belt, etc. Also, I bought a wheel disc cover from Wheel Builders and spent some time installing it - I have to say it does look good. I'm trying it out at this race to see if works ok for next week's Oly. The race starts at 7:00 and I live over an hour away, so it will be an early start for me tomorrow.
  • @Ralph - your wife and mine seem to be tap into the same "spouse wisdom bank". My wife tells her friends what I do and they collectively just shake their heads...

@Kim - read the race report. Couple of items, first I live on PB and nutella for lunch during the week. Three sandwiches a day since 2000. I discovered that combo in Kosovo when I kept getting food poisoning and I had to go to "safe food" that wasn't cooked. I love it! Next, your times and your race execution are just awesome! I would put that race report in Endurance Nation! Great race!

Instead of doing the bike test next week, I did a 41K TT today instead. I dread doing the trainer 40' test when my paincave is like 78 degrees nad 95% humidity. My avspd was 24.6mph and my LTHR was 163. My last TT on this course was early April and it was 23.8mph and LTHR 163. So, I'll take the improvement and the 2nd place in the 50+ category.

Now to kick back and watch Jack Reacher with my wife and relax. Tomorrow is supposed to be off, but I'll do a Birthday ride with a friend of mine and actually be social for a change!
  • My 1st triathlon of the season was an almost because the Swim was cancelled due to the rough water. They pulled over 10 people out of the water who started in the earlier waves. The wind was blowing over 20 mph, the air temp was 50 and the water temp 60 - so it was "warmer" in the water. But still very uncomfortable. The just standing and waiting for a long time and freezing was the worst part. But it was the wind that made a bad situation so much worse. Finally, they cancelled the swim.
So the race ended up being a Bike and Run. My toes were numb for most of the bike and about half the run. A strange feeling. Otherwise, I felt good and ended up winning my AG and with a strong bike and run. Work works!
  • @Jim - that is some pretty rough conditions! Congratulations on winning your age group. Sounds like you've establsihed yourself locally very well with the duathlon and now this! Well done!
