FTP test late in the training plan
Hi all
I realize I should have looked ahead at this week in the plan and posed this question last week, but here goes. I am in week 17 of the HIM int plan, A race is 4 weeks away (yahoo!). There is an FTP test in the schedule today and an option not to do the test and replace it with a FTP workout. I have searched the forums and read some interesting threads on the philosophy of testing close to the race, with the general idea being that the main purpose of a test at this point is to dial in race pace.
My problem is I am unable to test outdoors; I just haven't found a suitable place to do so near my house yet. My least RR was done at .8 of my indoor FTP (tested about 6 weeks ago) and felt pretty reasonable effort wise, with a good run afterwards.
So is there any point doing the FTP test on my trainer again? Or should I just do the optional FTP workout? I should note I do have an upcoming duathlon on the weekend with a 20k bike segment. Would that work as a reasonable alternative?

well I quit my whining, manned up, and did the FTP test outside. Went pretty well for the first time outside.

Nice job getting the test in. The RR would have been better data but 6 weeks out you could have some gains. The duathlon 20K will have a run before you get going and this could affect the outcome. Definitely look at your 20K du and the recent FTP test you can get a future reference should you need it.
