Broken Toe

On Wednesday I broke my toe when I fell off the couch trying to kill a yellow jacket. (I need a better story) I have not run since, only bike and swim. Anyone have tips on running with a broken toe. It is the middle toe on my right foot. My HIM is on June 15.

  • Larry - hoping to see you on 6/15! Running with a broken toe, though, seems questionable. Thoughts. You probably have race insurance for Patriot... is that an option? Can you convert to an aquabike? Yesterday was technically the last day but you could call, and an aqua-bike may be fun even with the injury... I can't imagine anyone recommending you run with a broken toe... I hope it feels better! ..
  • I broke two toes on my right foot two weeks before IMAZ2011, walking thru a hallway in my apartment in the middle of the night like I've done thousands of times. Stupid me.

I tried taping them together and/or to adjacent toes to keep them stable.

Doctors don't "set" broken toes unless they're really jacked up, from what I was told.

For me, I was lucky to be starting my taper, so my run volume was decreasing pre-race. But, for me, it was all a pain tolerance issue. What you can tolerate pain-wise, you're allowed to do!
  • So... in light of this... your plan?
  • I decided to go for a test run last night to see how much I could handle, and how far. I taped the toe to the one next to it, put on my squishiest running shoes, and went out. I managed 10 miles with about 1,000 feet of uphill running. I modified my stride a little. Instead of forefoot/midfoot landing I did all midfoot. The pain was manageable though my pace was much slower, 9:47 per mile vs 8:35. Some of that may have been the heat. 88 which was by far the hottest I have run in this year. (I miss winter running) I plan on going forward with the HIM and just run slower. Hopefully by Rev3 Maine I will be all better and can put forth my best effort.

    See you at the Patriot!
