Swim cadence

Hi guys,

I'm in run jail for the next three months (Achielles tendinopathy) - so I thought I would try to improve on my swim...

I'm clearly an overglider (swimsmooth definition) - and I want to try to improve my stroke rate...

Just out of curiosity...what is YOUR stroke rate?

let the voting begin :-)

  • Bo: bummer about your achilles, but I like your approach to making lemonade out of a lemons!

    Have you seen swimsmooth's page on stroke rate: http://www.swimsmooth.com/strokerate.html ? They are definitely big believers in breaking the over glider habit by cranking up the stroke rate. I had good luck just kicking up the stroke rate, break some bad habits.

    Mine is still a little low according to them: around 50-55 for a 1:45 ish steady pace. Should ideally be 60-65, I think. I bought a wetronome last year and swam with it a bunch, which got my threshold pace down to low 1:40s from 1:50s, but I need to start using again, and get my rate back up I think.

  • Tower 26 Swim videos suggest 80+ as the key for open water speed. Very tiring for me! http://tower26.com/
  • 80 is what I hear aswell...just seems totally unrealistic for me. I'm currently @ 65
  • hmmmm, I don't know at the moment. I'm also in swim jail and the only up side is that I do feel stronger in the swim than ever before. I'll have to do a test and report back.
  • Like Nemo, I have no clue. But I am sure it is far short of ideal. In fact, that probably sums up my entire swimming ability. However, after starting swimming late in life 6 years ago, I am better than ever due to continuous impreovement in my technique and having learned what hard really means in the water.

    Nemo - do you mean you are in RUN jail?
  • I'm in the upper 70s. I tend to shorten my stroke in rough (open) water in response to the conditions, but it's pretty much just a reflex, not a conscious choice...and as a 1:30/100 SCY pool swimmer, I'm not exactly a great model.

    For $35 or so, you can buy a tempo trainer that's the size of a digital watch without the band. You can stick it under a cap and use it as a metronome. Nifty little device.
  • I just did the Swim Smooth ramp test (image on link)

    Doesn't seem to much difference in speed regardless of cadence for me... Looking at this, I'll probably aim at getting better at 62 (I thought I was 65) and then progress from there...
