Open water swim workouts

A few weeks ago I was chatting with Coach P about swim stuff because my open water swim times were so far off of my pool times.  So while we chatting I thought of an idea to mark distance in open water that I could set out and do my pool workout in open water.

I thought what better way to train in the same environment as you race.  My idea is to place fishing water markers out at 100 yard and 200 yard.  These buoy markers range in price any where from 4.99 to 33 at Walmart.  They anchor in place with a little anchor and piece string that sinks to the bottom. (We actually use these in the fire industry for triangulating where a swimmer or scuba diver goes down or marking out an area where a witness saw something) They are pretty light and stay dang near were you drop them (they sway a little just like the typical race buoy we swim around).

I'm going to invest in a couple of the 20inch ones and see how well it works out at the lake ( we can swim where we want out there so perfect place to try it).

Here is the picture of the 20 inch and the 6inch one.  We work with the 6 inch one quite a bit and they can be seen from pretty far but like I said just shooting an idea out there.

  • I did something similar with balloons, hemp twine and rocks - tie twine around rock, lower to bottom of pond, inflate and tie balloon, cut and tie balloon to twine... worked well for sighting practice and required very little shopping...
