Jim - I just noticed this as well - in OWS mode, the 910 displays it as a pace (on garmin connect). In fact, it seems to sort of count OWS as a run mode, because it counts strokes and considers them to be cadence. It just occurred to me while writing this out that maybe in the settings of the watch, you can change the pace units.
I'm a tad disappointed in the 910xt OWS mode - doesn't give nearly the level of detail that pool swim does. I was hoping for some measure of efficiency or SWOLF or something similar. It'd obviously have to be correlated with a standard unit of measure like 25 yds or 25 meters - but at least something to give a comparison to a pool swim with!
You gotta remember the watch uses GPS while OWS and the accelerometer while in the pool.
GPS is terrible for swimming since you lose the signal just about every time the watch hand enters and goes under the water. The accelerometer works because you put in a known distance when you select the pool size and the watch adds that distance each time you turn around.
