IMMT Course Info

I figure over the next few weeks we'll have lots of discussion about the course and raceday logistics.  I thought it might be easier for us to just start a thread where we start collecting all those discussions for easy reference.  Sounds like we've already got our own resident expert (Tim) who can help keep us all from freaking out too much!  So if you've got info about the course to share, questions to ask, or have started hearing rumors about how they are putting a giant zip line on the course that we have to use to get from T2 to the run, put it all here!

Anyway- I did a quick search to find EN Race Reports from last year's race.  Not sure I found them all, but here is the list I've got so far.  I usually find reading these very helpful.

  • I did Tremblant last year.     See my report below.

My general bike course gist.     I am 6-6  185 lbs.       Almost 4 watt/kg.        My absolute power favors a flat course.           I do not do as well compared to others in hilly races.               But, my feeling is that this is a fast hilly bike course.       So even though the bike course is fairly hilly, this is one hilly course that I would like to do again and feel like I could do much better on.     Why ???      Guessing.     Some of the hills are gradual and not steep.     Some of the hills are punchy and short with the ablility to carry momentum through.

  • Tim, how was the run?? Heard it's hilly? When I did IMLP last summer, it was fair, but the two hills coming back into town were quad killers. Any comparison? Sorry to bother you with these questions. Just trying to recon the course in my mind.
  • Glenn... no worries ask away I'll answer if able... the run has a couple of very short and steep sections at the beginning maybe lasting 2 miles and then there is a long out and back on an old abandoned railroad track that is flat , at the end of the first loop you go up and back thru the village again short steep hills , then repeat.... so its a good mix of elevation changes but none of them are very long... not sure how it compares to IMLP as I have never done it....
  • Run course. As tim said. Hills, to me, not significant. Just enough to work different muscles. Nothing bothersome.
  • Robin and Tim, thanks for that info! It actually makes me feel a bit better about my specific situation. As I mentioned, I'm not running right now due to knee issues. (MRI done yesterday- doc appt Thurs- stay tuned). Likely suspect is a torn meniscus. Anyway- I plan on getting through the run by run/walking. Uphills don't bother me, but down definitely does. I figured I'd run up and walk down- HA HA HA! Sounds like this run course won't have as much down as I thought, so that's good news.

Oh- and I LURV!!!!!! the IMoo course. I'm kinda nutty that way- those hills seem completely doable and fun. So I'm looking forward to riding in IMMT (I just don't like scary decents- please tell me there are no scary decents).
  • Here's my run course file if anyone is interested in the course profile: http://connect.garmin.com/activity/213884728

@Nemo, the elevation changes are mostly in the rollers in first/last 2 miles from the turnaround, and I think you also get a fair amount of elevation change (cumulative) over the slight false flat of the rail road trail, but it's almost imperceptible.

Agree with Tim and Robin that it was a very fast course last year. I think the run/hills could present a more significant challenge with warmer weather though.

  • Thanks Trevor! Seeing that Garmin file makes me look forward to the race a little bit more- looks like it is going to be beautiful!
  • @Trevor, do you have your bike course file too?

two loops.   Basically long out and back then short out and back.       long out and back gradual hills and straighter (mostly).     short out and back crazy fun short hills and twisty (technical).

  • Thanks RObin- but for some reason I "don't have enough privaleges" to see your garmin file.
  • I couldnt view Robin's bike file either but heres mine from last year. Forgot to turn it off but nice file of elevation. The bike course , on paper ,looks much harder than it really is !

Looking at the run file from Trevor, that looks harder than I remember....definitely had some short tough sections .... Thanks Trevor!!!
  • Also, just an FYI they apparently changed the bike course from last year. I think they shortened the section that goes into town (Saint Joviet) somewhat and extended the out and back on 117 slightly. This should be a pretty trivial change though.

Talking about IMMT makes me really wish I was signed up for it this year. I loved that course, I definitely will go back.
  • I like that change to the bike course.... Hadnt heard it yet... Thanks for the good news.
  • In case you haven't seen the news, the IMMT swim will be wave starts (not a mass start).  I found the following tentative schedule for the waves.  This kinda makes me happy 'cause I don't have to worry about being swum over by big fast dudes.

There will be eight waves with each wave entering the water five minutes apart, starting at 6:25 a.m. All athletes will have at least 17 hours to complete the entire event (subject to intermediate cutoffs). The two hour and twenty minute cutoff for the swim will begin when the final wave has started the swim portion of the event.

     Tentative Swim Start Schedule:

    Wave

    Start Time

     Age Group

    1 6:25 M 18 - 34
    2 6:30 M 35 - 39
    3 6:35 M 40 - 44
    4 6:40 M 45 - 49
    5 6:45 M 50 +
    6 6:50 W 18 - 34
    7 6:55 W 35 - 44
    8 7:00 W 45 +

  • Wow -- early start!!! I'm not an early person -- that "Triathlon Alarm" setting (you know, like 4am) is really really really brutal for me!!

On the positive side, I too like the seedings. I am a fast swimmer, and would rather have fewer people in front of me to swim past (over!). The flip side is that they all treat me like a speedbump on the bike, but at least I have my moment in the sun exiting the swim!

  • Anybody using a compu trainer ? If so, is their a course similar to IM MT?
Got my bike professionally fitted Thursday night, some adjustments were made, after doing the 3.5 hr ride today, my shoulders were sore. Just need to get use to the muscle soreness? Or is it a fitting issue? It felt good on Thursday night. Any input would be appreciated. Thank you again. Also big happy Father's Day to all the dads out their. I will be at one of my daughters soccer tournaments tomorrow enjoying the day.
  • Ugh!!! Just saw the swim waves! I just turned 40, and do the swim around 1:20 ish, I'm not a strong swimmer, I'm going to get swam over. That's why I like mass swim starts. In LP, I smartly placed myself to the far right and in the back. I was like the last pack of 20 athletes into the swim. It was a enjoyable swim, without getting killed. Don't understand how weak swimmers like myself, place themselves with the more experienced and faster ones.
  • @Glenn.... I have a computrainer and I find the course video's absolutely useless... Yes I have IMMT too...... JMO

Swim Waves for IMMT.... I welcome them.. my best 2 IM swims were just under 1:06... IMFL and IMMT... So I line up in the front , take my lumps , and get those few extra minutes that come with the beating , Last year at IMMT was the first time I have ever been scared swimming , I would have traded 5 minutes of my swim split to get me the F%$k out of there immediately.... Done 2 more mass starts since IMCOZ and IMTX both a walk in the park compared to IMMT last year.... I'll take waves , rolling starts, TT , whatever over that crap they call a Mass start that is nothing more than a survival battle... Its not racing... The pro's dont have to do it... Wave starts will definitely spread things out more .... Recently at Quassy I was in the first wave of the day.... first time ever... I cant tell you how nice that was... Looks like I'm in the second wave of the IMMT 70.3 and looking forward to it...
  • I just want to thank you folks for posting your bike files from last year! In reading the Ironman maps and trying to do the conversions from metric to feet I somehow got all screwed up and thought we were looking at 11,000 ft elevation gain!!! EEEEEK! I'm feeling MUCh better now that I've looked at your files! Thanks!
  • Really good detailed course overview posted up on Slowtwitch here:
