Using a neutral shoe with custom orthotics?

Quite a number of years ago, I was fitted for custom orthotics using gait analysis software at a podiatrist.  This was mainly to correct some issues I kept having with my IT band.  The orthotics corrected my issues and have run virtually pain free since.  I kept the same shoe I had been using prior to the orthotics.

I have always used a stability shoes when running.  So my question is, is it necessary to use a stability shoe if I have custom orthotics to correct the shortcomings of my feet?  I asked the podiatrist this question but he said keep the same shoe but he wasn't all that interested discussing it at length.  I would like to have the choice of a lighter neutral shoe with my orthotics if possible.  Thoughts on this?
