IM CDA RR #2.. 108 Degree heat?

Hi coach,

I have RR #2 scheduled for this Sat. Forecast is for 108. I have a 4 loop bike course which will pass by my car after each loop. I can use car as aid station with ice/water, etc. I was planning on starting around 6am. That puts me on the run around 12 noon. I am concerned about the heat. I am confident in my set-up and nutrition plan. I also realize the purpose of the RR is not to create new fitness.  Should I modify the day, skip it altogether, or go for it and abandon ship if necessary? Jen D

  • Go for it on the bike for sure. Good chance to test your fluids, etc. Ideally eat 2.5 to 3 hours prior to simulate race day, then sip sports drink, have a power bar at 60' to go, then start food and fluids at 10' mark of the bike. Bail if it gets insane, otherwise just get the day done (have extra salt in case!). Lots of sunscreen too. When done you can decide about the run (not required at all).

Doing it here will insure you have truly battletested your plan.

Note if you feel better doing it on Sunday, I can help you adjust, at the end of the day it's your call!
  • I made it out alive! 109 miles in 6 hrs.  6 mile run in 57min. The heat forced me to stay at the zone 1 time.  Flat tire changed in less than 5 min. Had to jump in the river during the run, but otherwise very successful day! And it truly was 108 when I finished.  I am getting better at taking care of myself in the heat rather than trying to muscle my way through it. Hopefully CDA weather will be more manageable... there is NO way in H$%LL I could have run another 20 miles.

  • Jennifer, that's awesome. A huge confidence builder for sure. Make sure to stay on top of your hydration etc as you won't be 100% out of that workout until Tuesday!!! Congrats.
