Rev3 Quassy - The race that died twice, and ended with a zombie run

Today must be race report day for the Quassy half iron.  Here is mine to throw into the pile:

  • Wow Ryan!
I just loved the way you stuck at your task and stayed in 'the box' — not sure I would have stayed in the game.
Well done on your PR. Obviously you have a lot more time you can trim off.
I have had a few training days like your bike — once using my last Co2 cartridge I was trying to be so careful screwing the adaptor onto the valve, I broke the valve extender on my last tube ;( — fortunately someone in a car going in the other direction turned and stopped and helped me. He was a Roadie going to a bike race and took pity on me. Perhaps he was related to your helper?
There may be a bit of free speed you are leaving on the table? Have you looked at the tyre rolling resistance entry in the Race Execution section? http://members.endurancenation.us/Resources/RacingMemberCentral/RaceExecutionDetails.aspx
A lot of EN peeps use Vittoria Open Corsa Evo 320 tpi clinchers with latex tubes as this combo has a very low rolling resistance. Butyl vs latex tubes is worth almost 3 watts alone. WSW William Jenks wrote an article estimating how much time you would save using the lowest rolling resistance tyres and latex tubes vs other tyres and butyl tubes but I can't find it.
  • Good read Ryan and I particularly enjoyed the points at the end. Something there for everyone (me in particular).
  • Peter - the tires I use are continental grand prix 4000s, supposedly one of the lowest rolling resistance tires out there - but it does look like the Vittoria are faster. Unfortunately, they also look to be not as durable - and considering my luck lately, I need as much durability as I can get! image

Roy - yeah, it became really obvious on the run that it was totally worth sticking it out for the learning opportunity alone. Sucks to have had flats ruin a race that cost me like $250 - but that money was already out of the wallet, so mine as well get as much experience out of it as possible!
