Bagging a workoit...

I'm in week 6 of the out season and for the first time I shut it down mid workout. I just didn't have it today. In fact, I couldn't even hold my LT for 5 minutes let alone 15. Any way now I feel guilty but obviously my body needs the rest. Anyone else go through this?

  • Jason, don't worry about it. Everyone has those days where they just can't seem to hold it. When this happens to me and I know it's not in my head I listen to my body and pull the plug. We put our body's the a lot of stress with the OS and if it tells you it wants and extra day of rest.....well then give it what it wants! In the big picture, 1 workout is not going to have that much of an effect on your results.

  • Jason,

Nearly everyone goes through this. You are not alone.

You did the right thing; listened to your body and pulled the plug on the workout. To dig deep now just digs the hole of fatigue deeper; it doesn't add fitness.
  • Jason,

Yep it sucks and I definitely feel bad about not completing the workout.  The key is to learn to recognize your body's signals and stand down.  Even better if you shut it down for a day or two if need be.  It's better to take one or two day's easy then keep dragging through the next week or so.

For reference I took a two days off in the first 8 weeks and I was not even running.

  • The hardest lesson to learn is when to stand down, the second hardest lesson is learning that it's not going to matter in the grand scheme. You did the right thing. This is really hard work that pushes your body and your mind, both will need down time. What I've found is that you either take it as it comes or you take it when you least expect it when you're trying to drag yourself out of a fatigue hole later in your season. It is always hard to get rid of that small glimmer of guilt, but you will get more comfortable with it.
  • It happens to us all. If you use Training Peaks WKO software you can see the impact that missing one workout will have in the grand scheme of things. Not much.....

  • Jason, I'm in week 6, too (and only 3 of the run).

I know what you mean - the 2x15's sucked yesterday... I was surprised thinking my legs would be fresh after having Monday off.  It was a total struggle.  I bagged the run this morning (and can't run after work) and will have to rework the rest of my week - do the bike tomorrow and pick the run up Friday.

I'd say listening to your body is a good indicator.  In the grand scheme of things, missing one workout is nothing...

Sometimes when I don't want to workout... I force myself to start and realize it's exactly what I needed and I feel even better for finishing... you tried and your tank was on E and your head wasn't there, that's okay.  Great job for trying and for paying attention to your body.

Do the 2x15s tomorrow or Saturday... and kill em!

  • Great advice from the Peeps here- I'll just add one more thought. When you have to shut it down like that, don't be tempted to "make it up" later. Just let it go and don't look back. Instead, take a little time to consider how well your doing with rest/recovery/nutrition/stress in general and if there is an area there that you need to address (like getting to bed on time for example) then put your energy into fixing that issue.
  • +1 on everything shared especially Nemo's comment about "no make ups". Just watch your food intake as I'm an emotional eater and when I bag workouts or blow them (like my last 2 FTP efforts) I want to eat. It doesn't help my watts/kg issue!

  • Thanks for all the input. I rocked out the Sunday workout and I think I was still down from that. Also started a new job 3 weeks ago and went from 35 hrs a week to 50ish a week with alot more stress. Add to that my diet has been crap lately and you get a fatigued underrecovered body. I'm back on the healthy eating bandwagon and am really going to focus on proper recovery. Where have all my steady state zone 2 days gone......this crap is hard. Jason
  • Jason, all good points here. I will add that the answer here is ALWAYS do less. You will never ever hear PnI say that the right answer was to suck it up and drill yourself when your body is obviously telling you to do otherwise. Training through injuries, digging yourself into a hole without asking for advice will always be met with a punch in the nutz by the coaches

  • "...coaches" or a particular Coach? Seems to me "that other coach" only punches himself in the nutz with the treadmill....

not once but two times too boot.

  • Vince- DOH! LMAO!

Jason- I don't know what you were doing for work outs before the OS start, but I wasn't doing much. Several weeks into OS I was very fatigued. I completed the Power Clinic, and instead of testing this week, I am resting. There will be no making up the missed workouts. At my A race (IMWI) I doubt I will be saying "Boy, that rest week in February really hurt my IM time in September." No- that ain't gonna happen.

Realize that your LSS (life stress score) is quite high right now. Give yourself a break. Good luck.
