My first time trial

Just signed up for my first time trial!! An 8 mile almost completely flat - yet HOT - out-and-back, across a lake dam, here in the Dallas area. It's next Friday evening, the 21st. I've always wanted to do this event, and actually have the ability to make it this year!

I know that heat, humidity and (probably) wind will be an issue; but since this is Texas, not predictable enough to plan for and/or around.

I know the warm-up is key, with some big FTP and vo2 bursts. Anything more specific than that? I'll get there plenty in advance to get the warmup in, so that's no worry.

As for pacing...build to a negative split is what I'm thinking. But, having never done any flat out efforts like this before, it could be interesting. Any advice??

I'll be all aero-geeked out, with spermy helmet (with visor), aero jacket/wheel cover rear zipp 808 wheel with a zipp 404 front (both with latex tubes and Corsa evo tires). No bottles or even cages will be on the bike either.

Anything I'm missing??

  • Its pretty simple, just balls to the wall for 20-22 minutes. As you know, keeping things in check for the first 2-3 minutes is key, along with thorough warm - up, like 25-30 minutes. Think of it as an FTP test.
  • I did my first 10k TT about 6 weeks ago and loved it. I did the same one wed. And totally went too hard first mile or so. I had delusions of grandeur and toasted myself. So I'd say don't start off at vo2 watts and expect to hold that. Duh @ me...
