New Garmin Edge 500 Firmware Released

I know there are a few people using the edge 500 and a few more currently considering it.

Version 2.2 was released yesterday... I upgraded and have not had an issue yet.  I'll report back when/if I find a new issue with it

The two big difference is I can see is it can now do workouts like the 705 or the Joule and the power meter calibaration now returns an actual value.  The edge 500 might not do everything the Joule and 705 can do, but I think it is the best value as you can find them for $225 or less if you look around.

Changes made from version 2.10 to 2.20:

  • Workouts have been added.
  • Improved smart recording algorithms. This will improve track point dropping during turns.
  • Added %FTP Power, 30s Average Vertical Speed, and Maximum Speed as new Data Fields.
  • Increased detection radius for Elevation Points and added a detection message.
  • Improved Course processing and error handling.
  • Removed limitations on the displayed Power Calibration Value.
  • Added notification messages for Courses, Workouts, and Metabolic Profiles.
  • Added the ability to import .NLF New Leaf files.
  • Fixed some issues with setting files not being saved properly.
  • Improved Vertical Speed values.
  • The Bike Profile page should now show an invalid value if the wheel calibration is set to Auto and not yet calibrated.

  • Matt..... I picked up a Garmin 500 yesterday.  I've been using the 310xt and i has been fine, but want something bigger so I could see it better on the bike.   It works great but I can't figure out how to upload my workouts to WKO 3.0.  I uploaded to GaminConnect, but get an error when I try to direct upload into WKO 3.0.  I'm on a mac using parallels.  How are you uploading to WKO?

  • Mark, I have jsut been using the TP Device Agent and it is downloading direct to WKO with no issue for me.  TP just released a new version of WKO 3.0 and a new device agent last week.

  • I upgraded to the new firmware and did my first workout today.  All was well until the unit locked up on me.  I got it restarted and now the workout will not download into Garmin Training Center.  Hopefully it's a one time glitch but i'll report back if it continues.

  • Got the data into WKO+ through the device agent.  Whew!!!

  • Just bought a new 500 off eBay for $219 shipped. I've heard lots of positive reviews. It if's really that good I may just pull my $400 back from the Joule order.
  • I'm pretty technically inclined, but for some reason I can't seem to figure out how to update the firmware.  Any tips???

  • If you create an account on the garmin site, then plug the 500 into your computer, the software should examind your device for any software updates.  Worked for me.

  • The other way is to install the garmin updater on your PC: http://www8.garmin.com/products/webupdater/
  • Got it, thanks.
  • I couldn't figure out how to get FTP into the unit so that I can use %FTP. The instructions say to use garmin training center, but I couldn't find anything there either. Any ideas?
  • The only way I was able to get FTP into the unit was to use the Garmin Connect website to set my zones and then download it to the device.
  • Yep that's the way to do it.  Go to Garmin Connect and under settings/training zones you can enter power zones then click "send to device".

  • Kind of sucks that you need online access to change your FTP.
  • Yeah it does, and it is a pain that you have to reconfigure the zones as well, but it only takes a few minutes.  The positive side to it si that when you get new firmware updates all you have to do is log in again and push the settings out to the edge...you don't have to recreate the zones.

My pet peave is that each firmware update so far I have had to reconfigure the data screens...but for a $200+ saving I can handle it.

  • My 500 was waiting for me when I got home from vacation tonight! Unfortunately, the FedEx man is holding my Quarq hostage for a signature. Sooooo close to being back on the power train.
  • Just got my Garmin 500. I am a power newbie.
I have gone through the Garmin Internet software but dont see where we can keep track and measure normalized power, FTP, IF and TSS?
Is this only with WKO+ software? How do I get that?
  • Dennis - welcome to a whole new world! You'll really wonder how you trained/raced without power before this...

Correct - the Garmin 500 doesn't display NP, IF, TSS, but will display % of FTP/zones once you've set it up in Garmin Connect.

You can purchase WKO+ directly at www.trainingpeaks.com or, I believe, through R n P here in the haus. Sorry - didn't look up the link before posting this reply.

Last thing - Garmin just recently released firmware version 2.4

    Thanks Mike!

Have you used 2.4 yet or has anyone else to confirm the issues are actually fixed?

Here are the notes, I highlighted two features that may be of interest to some folks in the haus.

Changes made from version 2.30 to 2.40:

    • Fixed issue that was causing unit freezes on manual and auto laps
    • Fixed issue that was causing missing activities after reset
    • Fixed issue that was causing missing laps and bad timestamps in activities
    • Fixed issue causing large elevation readings to be recorded in activities that created errors when uploaded to Garmin Connect
    • Improved smart recording
    • Added a Statute UK setting that sets distance to miles, speed to mph, elevation to meters and temperature to Celsius
    • Fixed issues related to editing workouts
    • Fixed issues with 'Repeat Until' in workouts
    • Implemented a prompt if the timer is not reset after 4 hours to remind the user to reset
    • Corrections to ANT wheel speed, size and auto calibration with PT hubs
    • Course Map Zooming -> The device now pops up a page on the course map with the light key like is done for the course scaling. This page will allow the user to set the zooming to auto or to some set zoom level.
    • Updated the Start Notice feature to alert the user any time the timer is not running if set to Repeat
    • Fixed issue causing elapsed time to not be calculated correctly
    • Delete Garmin software update files after updates are complete
    • Updated translations
  • Thanks Mike!

    Hey Matt,

I have to admit that I've only had the 500 for a couple of weeks and hadn't had any problems with it to date, so not sure if it's fixed anything.

  • Same here, I have had it since december and it has froze on me exactly once which I think was my own fault as I held down the lap button to log and it started to reset and then I pressed it again to do a lap instead and it locked up. I just restarted it though and it worked again and no data was lost.

Others have complained on the forms about both of the two issues I marked in bold so I thought it might help them, but like you, since I'm not having the issue I'm going to wait to update mine.
  • I love and HATE high tech. I could not care less about w/o capability but guess I will suffer through the upgrade process if it tracks satellites better. The rest of the changes are noise level.
