My B race cancelled... now what?

So I had a half distance race scheduled for July 27th (Mountain Tropic Tri) on the way to my big race this year, IMLT (Sept 22).  Per your suggestions, I was doing the HIM intermediate plan for another couple of weeks (just started week 15), then switching to the IM intermediate plan (week 10 [July 8 - July 14]) a couple weeks before Mountain Tropic.

Well Mountain Tropic just informed me that the bike portion of the race has been cancelled (couldn't get permits or something).  I have zero desire to do a "two-thirds-athon" as my friend calls it, especially since I feel I need the most work on my bike right now.  The only other half distance race near me, the Utah Half, isn't until late August.

So do I keep on the current course, and just do a half distance race rehearsal when I would have done my half ?  Do I switch back to my full distance plan early?  Or do I take the next few (three ?) weeks and concentrate on my bike (a piece of the bike focus plan ?) until week 10 of the IM plan?  Or is there an even better course I'm not thinking of?

I don't have any more serious races planned before IMLT.  I may do a 10k or even an Oly or two for fun, but nothing that should impact my training.  What do you think?

  • So what motivates you? You are almost in the window for starting the last 12 weeks of your IM plan but if you want to race a HIM then find something else on July 27th or EARLIER.
  • Stay in the HIM plan, use it for speedwork. Drop out of the HIM plan after Wk 18 (ie, complete HIM wk18) and move over to the IM plan. That said, I recommend you cap the distance of the long runs in the HIM plan to about 1:45. That is, since you're not really training for a half Ironman, there's no need right now to follow the volume guidance in the HIM plan. You can use that as an opportunity to drop the volume, dial up the intensity of those runs.

But putting something on the calendar between now and IMLT would be a good idea to keep your head out of space where you're constantly thinking about training for IMLT.
