EN Birthday Challenge

Some people like to celebrate their Birthdays the traditional way....with cake, ice cream, perhaps some drinking, but why be traditional. After all you are an athlete right?  Why not celebrate your Birthday with a Challenge.

  • Love this idea! I've done various flavors of this for my last 3 birthdays. I take the day off from work as a vacation day and spend it pretending I'm a pro triathlete. Not a bad way to celebrate!
  • Seems like a pretty tough challenge for us OLDS on the Insane level, but I will be in the middle of my IM Cozumel build when the time comes and may have to give it a tri.
  • Even harder for those who have birthday in winter months :-)
  • Nice! Since IMMT 70.3 actually falls on my birthday this year (June 23), then I should be good.
I just need to do one more swim loop than everyone else image
  • My birthday was this past Monday, and I'm tapering for CdA #doublefail image
  • This is intriguing. I turn 53 in about a week. Hmmn. I love a challenge.
  • My birthday is the day after Kona this year. I think the 140.6 the day before on the island is good enough so I'll head to the volcano and see if I can blow out that big candle the day after the race.
  • IMAZ on my birthday. Biggest Bday I'll ever do.
  • Okay - it is in the plan. Swim 5300m on Friday, bike 53 on Saturday and then run at least three after that as a brick workout. Yeah, the swim will be a challenge to get all that in on a workday. But, it'll be a great day to do stroke work, kicking, and IM stuff.
  • Okay - I got it done! So here are the details. 53rd Birthday - 26 June. So I did the swim on 28 June (Friday) and the bike and run 29 June (Saturday):

Friday - I got in 5300m total. Morning workout was a 2000yd TT with warm up and cool down, total 2500yds (2250m). During lunch, felt a bit sore so I did 30 X 100 with 100s as Free; kick: IM: kick and so on for a total of 30. I put in the extra 50m at the end to make it 3050m for a grand total of 5300m. Lesson learned - this takes a LONG TIME.

Saturday - 53mi bike, nothing unusual. However, I picked the hottest day of the year and the run ended up as the minimum of 3miles. Original plan had 5.3miles, but just melted and 3 sounded just fine. Lesson learned - change birthday to a cooler day next year.

Bottom Line: done as a borderline sane birthday boy!
  • ok so I gave it a go as a reverse tri. This morning did a 5.5 mile trail run in 55:55. Then 55 miles on the bike in 3:15. Then 5500y swim in 1:55.

Started the run while it was still dark and ran through sun up to a leisurely T1 that included a breakfast of oatmeal with protein powder and fruit/nuts. The ride started out chilly but soon was pleasant and took me past a farm stand selling apple fritters so I bought a half dozen, managed to resist eating all 6 and brought 3 of them at home for my wife. Got a flat today. The swim was not nearly as fun as the run/bike. Haven't swam since the middle of August, at all. Brought all the toys: pull, fins, paddles, kickboard. Used them all. Free and back. Really didn't want to finish but kept saying 'just do another 20 length set then stop". Finally finished 11 x 20 length sets.

Running in the early morning dark through sun up was lovely and reminded me of all the things that are good about running. It was a beautiful fall day for a ride, lots of foliage carpeting the local hills and other than the flat was wonderful to get in a ride before the weather makes outdoor riding increasingly risky. I normally am able to lose myself in the rhythmic repetition of lap swimming, not today. It was like the water was thick. Guess I shouldn't be surprised it was hard given how little swimming I've done lately.

  • @Chris - sounds like you went through the same swim mode I went through, "just get me through this..."

    Congratulations!!!
  • Nice work Chris. Now you need to upload the icon to your signature block.
  • Nice way to celebrate the birthday, Chris, even with a tough swim. Any day training is a good time, right?

You all have given me some good ideas for my b-day, which is next month. I'm loving Nemo's idea of taking the day off to live as a pro triathlete. Now...have a month to decide swim, bike, run...or run, bike, swim. I'll only be 47, so the distances are so bad ;-)
  • Good luck Antonia. It was reverse because of pool time availability but it was interesting to do it that way.
  • Do I get my cake Icon? IMAZ on my 56th!
  • yes you do David, buy you have to upload it yourself. You can find out how to do it and where to get the icon in the wiki.
  • Sooo my B-day (47) is in the 27th the day after Vineman Full (July26th)...does "walking" after the IM distance Tri count as a 'challenge'? image

  • How about you recover and then do the challenge on another day :-)
