tri top on IMLP bike leg or...

I almost hesitate to ask this just because it strikes me as a little bit dorky but hey if the shoe fits...

I got a nasty sunburn at Lake Placid last year (I was sunblocked theoretically but i guess it didnt work so well or I messed up or ...) so I was considering wearing a bike jersey (EN of course!) during the bike leg this year. I wore it during RR#1 saturday and it was fine, changed quickly to a running shirt in "T2" ....so - is it too dorky of a move or is there some other huge negative that I am not thinking through ? All opinions welcome!

  • Always comfort first. To many laypeeps, triathletes are big dorks anyways so it doesn't matter. My kids still make fun of my aero helmet. Thank god they haven't seem pics of my Faris al-Sultan style Speedo briefs that I wore in my very first tri 16 yrs ago.
  • Rich ... See this thread on DeSoto "wings" which are billed ar coolers, but work great as sun screeners, for which I have worn them on occasion in IMs. MUCH easier to deal with than trying to put on/take off bike jersey when wet, tired, in a hurry.

I also wore them once in an IM run when it was drizzle, 50F, to keep me warm. Never found them to be helpful for keeping cool, though.
  • Like Al, I use Desoto wings.
You just need to be careful with the spots on the back of the shoulders where the EN tri top and the wings don't overlap.
  • I plan to wear a tri top all day but will put on an EN jersey in T1. I did this for sever HIMs last year and my first RR 2 weeks ago. Worked great. No fuss putting it on or off and kept me from getting a repeat of severe blistering on my shoulder blades like in 2011.
  • 2011 I wore tri top at IMLP and got crazy sunburn. Really impacted the recovery. 2012 IMFL I wore the bike jersey and no sunburn. did a quick change into a tri top for the run. I'm undecided for this year. Might try tne cool wings as others have suggested or just go with the bike jersey again. Love those big pockets for holding an extra bottle if needed.

ultimately, it All depends upon what your goals are on race day. Throwing on a bike jersey and zipping it up only takes 10 seconds or so, taking it off and putting on a tri top for the run takes a bit longer. I must say, I was very happy to not be sunburn after IMFL.
  • Tri-top = much more aero, plus communicates a seriousness about the event that says "it's on", much like shaving legs

Nothing wrong with choosing a bike jersey if that's consistent with your goals, but I can't fathom why you'd change into a tri top for the run over a tech tee.

Personally, I prefer to go tri top, make sure they get sunscreen on in T1, but MUCH more importantly, make sure to have a volunteer re-sunscreen you at Bike Special Needs. There are dedicated volunteers at BSN just for that. Tell them to get extra on the shoulders and neck, and to get up and under the tri top a little bit. YMMV
  • Will you look like a dork? NO.
I have the EN cycling jersey and plan to wear on the bike, for me.... it just fits.... and I like the bigger pockets.

    Good Luck.
  • As mike said. If you want fast, think of the aeroness of the shirt.
