Heads up display for cycling like google glass

Knew this technology was inevitable with Google glass already out there. Kinda cool but still in pilot.

  • This looks very cool! I'm sure I'll eventually have one, just not sure if I want to be a beta tester...
  • Been geeking out over these for a while but yesterday was the price reveal and pre-order announcement. I honestly didn't see myself buying these simply because they're a bit over the top and $500 is a lot to throw down on something so unproven.

However, if you take a look at the tech specs and consider what you're getting for the money, the price is really not unreasonable. Figure a decent ANT+ GPS enabled cycling computer (Edge 510 or 910xt) runs you $300-350 and a decent pair of shades runs you $100-150. You are already at $500 bucks for some sunglasses and a bike computer, completely ignoring the fact that you now have an HMD that supports wifi, bluetooth (although edge 510 also does bluetooth), has a dual core processor, runs Android, has a gig of RAM, takes POV pictures and HD video, has 8gb of onboard flash memory... etc.

I'm not saying this thing isn't dorky or over the top, it most definitely is, but if you look at it feature-by-feature to everything else that is on the market, 500 bucks is actually a surprisingly reasonable price. That is after all, 1/3rd the cost of the Google Glass explorer edition ($1500) that actually has far less features... but pretty radically different display technology so the two should not be compared quite so lightly.

So after musing on a bit yesterday... I went ahead and pulled the trigger on a pre-order. The major bummer is that they aren't shipping until December, but on the plus side you can cancel your order at any time and there is a standard return window after delivery (plus warranty), so I figured I'd rather lock down my place at the front of the line for these and have the ability to change my mind later versus being SOL if they are sold out at launch.

  • Dam you Trevor!!! I was perfectly happy to wait 2 yrs and actually get a pair that would have all of the stupid bugs worked out... But you had to go and get all geeky and techy on me so I also just bought a pair. Merry Christmas to me. Wonder how long before Jess reads this and rolls her eyes at me...
  • I'm sure we can get Dino on-board too then you guys can officially tell the wives that all the cool kids were doing it.

Plus there's an open SDK, so we can make the official EN Jet app; coach Rich appears on your screen calls you a sissy anytime you drop below 85% FTP.

We need to buy her a pair of goofy glasses in which her eyes appear to be in a constant state of rollage, as I'm sure that's her permanent state...

  • Reviewed specs (pun intended) as best I could. Reasons I wont be buying: 4-6 hour battery life, not frameless on top (when on aerobars, I need all the upward visibility I can get), right eye placement (im left eye dominant), no evidence yet that it will show me everthing my Joule does, specifically lap IF, admission by Recon that this is an incomplete product, rushed to market.

To Trevor's point, I already have sunglasses and a power/pace display that work for me.
