Run Test and New Paces -oh oh

Hi all...very happy but freaked out.  Shaved 1:30 off my 5K time which is AWESOME - did my 5K with an 8:15 pace - 8:17,8:13,8:16 = so very steady!  The freaked out part is that 9 weeks out from IMC my paces skipped a level and I am nervous about the jump in my paces.

Question - should I really go with the new paces or in between?? I missed the last two run tests which clearly is an issue as I should have bumped up the paces sooner.  New paces are scary, the in between look wayyy more achievable.

OLD NEW In Between
LP 11:15 10:49 11:02
MP 9:47 9:20 9:33
HP 9:30 9:03 9:15
TP 9:05 8:44 8:55

Interested in thoughts...thanks.

Ann

  • Short answer: train with the new paces from your recent 5k. The VDOT concept + the EN workouts ensures that you WILL be able to train at your "new" paces. You're paying good $ to RnP because they know what they are doing, right? Don't be afraid of success!

Come race day, though, you will probably want to set your pace off of a VDOT 2-3 points below your new VDOT.
  • Ann - good work.  The key fact was that you held your pace constant at the faster speed.   2x what Al said.  You earned that new VDOT.
  • 9 weeks out is plenty of time for the body to get use to its new pace. By week 3 you should be handling things just fine. Have some confidence in your run you earned the right to run faster so, go out there and run faster!
  • Thanks guys! Appreciate the feedback. Clearly lacking confidence in my running.....working on that!
Yesterday hit the paces. Today - hot one in Seattle, last mile up hill was able to hit the marathon pace.
