Garmin 500 or 510

I think I know my answer, but wanted some third party objectivity regarding it.

My joule is pissing me off with the different values between it and wko (http://members.endurancenation.us/Forums/tabid/57/aft/11941/Default.aspx), so I'm contemplating ditching in favor of a garmin.

I've read various posts on here about the 500 and the 510, as well as the dcrainmaker posts.

I really don't need anything fancy, but REALLY want an auto interval/lap timer that shows the current interval/lap values (ex IF, 3 sec power and mileage, etc), so I can focus on the "now" more than the whole ride and trying to make up power, speed or anything else.

My joule 2.0 currently displays 3 sec power, hr, speed/mph, cadence, IF (overall), mileage, kilo joules (don't care) and ride time (overall).

I've got two bikes, road and TT, both with garmin speed/cadence sensors and my quarq I share between them.

Is a garmin 500 all I need (with an extra mount for the second bike)? The 510 just seems like too much for my purposes, especially at $75-100 more.

Thanks all!!

  • The 510 has more bells and whistles, but the 500 is bomb proof. My 510 is currently at a class reunion in Olathe, KS getting it's head examined. It died and Garmin has for it back before they ship its twin brother. My old 500 is now doing the duty on my k-edge.

All that being said. I like the 510 better. The fact that it syncs with my phone, will hold multiple bike and usage occasions saved as profiles and and automatically upload to Garmin connect make it the winner....
  • I have both and haven't used the 500 since I got the 510. Love the mufti bike features and the automated workout upload.
  • My wife has the 500 and I can't find IF (lap).....I have the 800 and same limitation....I would like that option though....FWIW I dumped the Joule and picked the 800 for larger font (old eyes)

Does the 510 have the capability of IF (lap)?
  • No. Sadly, it does not have lap IF. Which is majorly lame because it has lap NP and AP. I hope it is just a software update away....
  • I have the 500 and would love lap IF. It would help sort out what is actually going on. However, it is bomb proof. I've had mine for at least 3 years and never a problem. If it ever croaks, I am going to the 510. Hopefully, they will get the bugs fixed by then.
  • I have the 510. Love mine. Visibility OK to good (I'm 58 and can't read smallest fonts on all but a bright, high-sun day).
