Help!!! I have a Pinched Nerve

Hello All,

So i have a pinched nerve in my  shoulders/neck.  It hurts when i swim and bike.  And it hurts like a mother.  So i have been going to a Chiropractor and i am getting massages.  What else can i do?  What can i do with my training to potentially limit the time i am in pain.

I am in week 17 of IM intermediate training for Lake Placid in 27 days!!

 Thoughts?

  • I roll around on my back and neck on my foam roller a LOT lately, to keep those at bay. Whenever I ramp up my mileage I seem more susceptible to those types of things.

I also have regular (every 2-3 weeks) chiro appointments, with an hour long massage preceding them.
  • Do you know the cause of your injury? Who diagnosed it? How was it diagnosed? Has the chiro addressed the source if it is postural or due to body position/mechanics?
  • Carrie,

It was diagnosed by the chiro. It was caused because of being tense during my first 112 mile ride. And then turning around and doing a 56 mile ride the next day. Too much aero and too much shoulder shrugging.

  • Can you ride your road bike as this is not aero and the sitting up position may allow you keep up on the leg fitness? I would also use this on a trainer not outside where you have to use the upper body to make turns and put stress on that area/nerve location until you heal up completely. A few weeks off your Tri bike will not hurt you. As far a swimming just stop and heal up.
  • Road bike? whats that? LOL.... I'm poor and only have one bike. Well not really poor, I just live in a condo and have no room for more than one bike. The back pain is getting better if i stretch and relax my shoulders. Heck when i am in aero, as long as i relax my shoulders, i am more comfortable than when i tense or when i sit up on the bars.
  • When I broke my clavicle and ribs under my scapula last spring I had a ton of neck/shoulder tightness. I got acupuncture for the first time and I found it brought a great deal of relief. The used e-stim on the needles were in and that seemed to make a big difference.
