Dying trainer?

My trainer is several tears old and has always been reliable. This morning it seemed very hard to generate any watts during my intervals. I have not had this issue in the past. After the ride, I left the room to gat a drink and when I returned it smelled like something was burning. The smell was coming from the trainer. Any advice on a way to service it or has it just hit the end of the line?

  • brand and model?
  • CycleOps - Fluid Trainer - the first version
  • Do you see any fluid leaking out? It could be that some of the silicone is starting to leak because of all the thermal expansion/contraction cycles of the unit. From what I've heard, Cycleops is pretty good about replacing the resistance units, so you might want to contact them and give it a shot.
  • I believe you can get a replacement resistance unit for the Cycleops units, as Anson indicates. Contact them directly or if you work with an LBS that also sells them, go there if you prefer. (My LBS does, and has been able to get a few apparently obscure parts pretty easily, and sometimes free, over the years.)
