Front derailleur issues

Hello all,

I am having issues with my front derailleur. I have issue shifting into the large chain ring unless I'm in a larger gear in the back. Also my chain is rubbing when in the large chain ring is in the last 3 to 4 hard gears on the cassette. I have tried adjusting the H screw, with no help. I have also rest the cable on the derailleur... I am stumped.

My components are SRAM red for everything. And the crank is a SRAM quarq 53/39. The cassette is a 12/28 SRAM red

Thought???

  • All i can think of is to systematically work the setup instructons from a book like Zinn's bike maintenance.
  • I (over) rely on my LBS. I've gotta learn some basic maintenance like this!
  • I do much (almost all) of my own bike maintenance. But as many times as I have tried, I can never seem to get deraileur adjustments right. Sometimes the difference between good shifting and bad shifting is as little as a half a turn of one of the screws... So for Deraileur adjustments, I take it to the LBS because they have done thousands of them and can get it perfect within about a minute.
  • i am glad John said it.    I think of myself as a fairly good wrench.   but sometimes those dam derailleurs.....

I can wrench the hell out of most things on a bike but the FD and RD adjustments are like a Rubik's Cube to me.  I always brought it to the LBS for FD/RD adjustments.

That's another reason why Di2 has been a godsend for me because the trim function makes it super easy to adjust.  I have never brought my Di2 equipped bike to the LBS for FD/RD adjustments.

  • I do more and more of my work. I will mess around with the RD...and sometimes get it and sometimes not. But I take the FD to the LBS too. :-)
  • It is at the LBS right now.. i can pick it up within an hour of them having it. AWESOME!!!
  • Don't forget to take some refreshments with you when you pick it up
  • Next time YouTube - there are so many videos showing how to adjust FD & RD.
  • Cary, i watched 6 videos and they all said the same thing. I did everything they said and it did not help. image So i had to take it in. They cleaned up the bike after a hot sweaty ride.
  • Jonathan - you did the right thing. It helps to know the workings of the FD and RD in case you need to do a roadside repair.

Now, cleaning your bike... That is something that should be done with pride at least once a week, preferably with a cold frosty beverage nearby image
