Need help modifying my ironman training plan

Ive loaded the intermediate ironman training plan and this week was ftp and vdot testing week. Then next week im jumping to week 12 so my plan is aligned for cedar point full iron but next week is calling for another ftp and vdot testing week. What do i do? Which week should i do instead of the ftp and vdot testing week?

  • @Jayson, great question! I have a wiki post for you (Under Self Coaching) right here:

    Thanks!!!!
  • Perfect!!

    thanks Patrick!!
  • Looks like you signed off before I hit reply on your chat question: Totally..it's not ideal from a swim fatigue situation but it makes total LIFE sense....
  • Test where you will be the most consistent. We usually recommend road for "in season" testing, but if you live in a metropolitan area, that might not work for you!
  • Coach,

Id like to have an epic weekend this weekend as it is a long weekend up here in Canada.  I am 6 weeks away from Cedar Point full (using ironman intermediate).  I attended your Ironman Lake Placid camp last year and if I remember correctly that was 6 weeks away from the race?  Im going to try and mimic your camp schedules into this weekend.

    My epic weekend would consists:

Friday - long swim 3.8km as per schedule

Saturday- 3x1mile (tuesdays work out) 3k swim

    Sunday - 112miles (RR1)

    Monday - 100miles +/-

    Tuesdays off

    wednesdays - ??

    Thursdays- long run

    Then back to normal schedule.

    I havent done anything yet!
    So heres my plan
This coming thursday long run as per schedule
    Friday swim as per schedule.
Saturday 180k ride and 1hr run RR as per schedule
    Sunday 180k ride easy
    Monday off
Tuesday as per schedule then back to schedule

Almost the same schedule we had in LP training camp last year.
    Let me know thanks!
  • Ah, i got the "this week / last week" messed up. Your plan sounds okay, you might need to dial back the Friday swim to be 100% heading into the weekend; your call!

    I wish u a speedy recovery!

I think my wednesday ftp rides are affecting my thursdays long run. Last night i did it on the trainer cause it rained here and i worked really hard on it cause it was tougher than the road!
Im doing the intermediate plan ironman and im thinking of moving my long run on wednesday and ftp rides on a thursday. I wanna check in with you if this doesnt effect anything. Tuesday will be intervals as usual and saturdays will be long rides as per usual. Im gonna try it for a week next week and see hot it feels. Let me know what u think.
  • any chance you can do those interval rides on Wednesday morning? I think a night workout followed by the morning workouts too much. You probably need 24 hours of recovery.

I managed to do 3hrs of riding today instead of 4.5 as prescribed but tomorrow sunday aug 11 i cannot definitely getout due to family stuff. Monday ill be dropping relatives home in buffalo 2.5hrs from where i am + traffic so i dont know what time ill be home. Which day of the week should i do my 3.5hrs scheduled for sunday? Thanks coach!
  • @Jayson, you are close enough that it's too costly to mess up the greater week. Consider it a "Bonus" rest day that puts you ahead of the competition...seriously, it's a good thing.
