Dino's In CDA Race Report!!!!!

Here are the details of how I crawled to a 12:00:03 finish IMCDA.  The report is long, it's self indulgent, but it was my first IM and its got plenty of pictures and tables....

Good ahead and check it out here.

  • Huge Success in your first IM and even more impressive is your transformation.... Big congrats on both!
  • Dino - Congrats on a great race and a well-written report.  Well Done!!
  • Dino, what a perfect day for you! You're charmed; I hope you sustain it when we race together in Sept.

    Three reactions:

    • You've still got a LOT of headroom to improve on the bike - keep working!
    • My favorite line in the report (I like Freudian slips!): "I waited about a minute for the port-o-potty, but it was worth it.  That stop did the trick on the feelings in my lower abdomen. I then pooped my advil..."
    • Your finish photo inspired me to start a new thread "The Best (& Worst) Finish Line Photos" Check >here< for my contribution to your learning process - how it's *supposed* to be done when you leap across the line.
  • Nicely planned and executed. Your hourly bike perform volume and calories and sodium are all pretty low. I know you said you took in some water too. For races that are hotter, or even for all races, might you want to increase all of these, mainly by increasing perform intake?
  • Congratulations Dino! So I have to tell you this story. My son and his family were here this week vacationing. I was reading your race report and my 2 grandkids were sitting next to me and I was showing them the pictures. Every day since then when I got on the computer, my 2 1/2 year old granddaughter says "I want to see the guy with the rash on his neck!" LOL So I'd have to go back to your race report and show her the pictures of you on the bike with your jacket and then the picture of your rash. She is obsessed with that picture! I wonder if she'll remember next time she comes to visit:-) I personally like the finish line video the best!!
  • Dino- great race buddy! You trained and prepared so well for that thing and it showed in the way you executed like an Ironman veteran! I loved the spill at the end so much and can totally understand the pure and utter focus on a 4:20 marathon once that became your late in race goal. You are gonna crush IMaHoe!

Regarding your 510 issues. It must have been mind-numbing to have that happen during your race. Just last week, my 510 stopped reading power altogether during a training week on the Lake Placid course.. Luckily I had my 910 with me. For races, I have a quick release strap on my 910 and I have a quick release attachment point on my aerobars next to where my 510 is. So in case of my 510 crapping out, I can turn my 910 on and see it in front of me instead of on my wrist (I don't swim with mine). You can keep only the important power stuff on there because chances are, the 510 will still likely have the stuff like Time and speed and distance on there. Even if a soft or hard reset (or replacement unit) gets my 510 back to reading power again, I think I will race at Placid with my trusty old Edge 500 instead because I simply think it is more reliable than the newer technology. Frankly, I also think my older 310xt watch is also more reliable than my 910xt as well...

But seriously congrats dude. You Are An IRONMAN!!!
  • Awesome race, Dino!  You had a great run, especially the last 6 miles.  You obviously executed really well to have gas in the tank to make a final push like you did.  The finish line........Absolutely classic

It was great to meet you and a lot of fun racing with you.  Best of luck in Tahoe!

    mark

  • Dino, great report! I also loved the "pooped the Advil" line! Look forward to meeting you in Tahoe come September!! And, congratulations on a great first Ironman!
  • Awesome report, I loved it! Well written.
  • Nice work, Dino. And great write-up. Thanks for sharing. Congrats!
  • Dino,
Okay....so I realize I'm a little late to the party here but I'm trying to determine which course I want to do for my first full IM & I'm leaning towards CDA. So I figured I'd read some of the race reports. Let me first say that I loved your report - loved the details, the pictures, the charts & the positive energy that ran throughout the whole thing. I read your report and watched the "jump" video yesterday afternoon and as I was trying to explain it to my wife last night I just decided to pull up the report for her to see. We watched the jump video and laughed and laughed and laughed (not at you...but because of the way you described it and then seeing it)....the best part about it really was your commentary leading up to it. I think the video in isolation creates that "oh man...I hope he's okay" response...BUT reading the play by play and then seeing the video made us laugh like we haven't laughed in a while. All that to say - GREAT JOB at CDA! I only hope my first full IM goes as well as yours did!
  • @David - That's cool! Thanks. You should do CdA. It's cool race with a lot of history on the IM circuit.
