JEH's Macro thread for Nov 2013-April(ish) 2014
Yup - I'm a neurotc, typical tri geek planner. Only because I just love this stuff so much!! Super bummed that the orangeman was cancelled this fall!!
I am trying to decide on a few things for the rest of the "season." Figured I would solicit input before I got all solid on a course of action.
I am signed up already for the HITS half iron in Havasu in November.
I am considering whether I might want to also do the HITS championship in Palm Springs in December. If you are one of the first 500 to sign up they don't require you to qualify. It sounds like fun. Palm springs is relatively close and easy to get to. Plus if I sign up before August it's only $150.
I am just about to sign up for Ironman CA 70.3 in oceanside in March (29th). So let call that in for the moment.
I would like to add a bike event in the early spring too. I like really hilly, long stuff. So I am trying to decide if I want to do a) the mullholland double on April 12th and do this all in one shot, or go for the king of the mountain jersey and do mullholland challenge, heartbreak hundred and breathless agony between April and May.
Likely Ironman Tahoe as my 2014 ironman.
SO - questions are: 1. Thoughts on doing the HITS palm springs race in Dec? 2. Thoughts on the one double with 16K oft of climbing vs. 3 centuries in one month with a combined 30K feet of climbing?
Love to hear your thoughts!! Thanks for listening!

Timing is good / fine for all of those events given that you're in SoCal. A few notes:
Thank you for the thoughts!! It's good for me to seriously consider the weather aspect in Palm Springs. Especially if the quality is hit or miss. Since I am already committed to Havasu, it might be smart to just use that as a tester for the series and be done with it. As for the Big Kahuna/Orangeman - I really just liked that the Orangeman was so close to me, and that it went up the Ortega hwy - a really fun ride. But I'm not super set on having a race this Sept, so maybe good to just chillax a bit and get ready for Havasu, maybe let the BF get me into a little bit of mountain bike-ish "racing" over the summer (meaning I only own a cross bike). But since I didn't know about the big Kahuna race, I will definitely keep it in mind for the future!
Will definitely poke around for half marrys in January-February. That should be really fun to have on the schedule as well.
I will most likely just go for the series rides I think then, after reading your thoughts. When I did the Solvang Autumn double, I "qualified" to do the Mulholland double, so for a time I wanted to do it because I "could" and because it sounded crazy hard, and because I was not expecting to be able to make that time cutoff to "qualify." But it seems to have lost its sparkle for the moment, and doing the climbing series might be better for me as an athlete anyway.
PS - my boyfriend almost got us a tandem road bike about 6 months ago, but due to some stupid cyber hitch, he wasn't able to place the winning bid, which was well within what he had decided to spend. So, it's been on our radar for sure! I can see how it can be both awesome and little scary at the same time.
Thanks again!!
oooook, a few more questions if anyone is still home on this thread:
Valerie has decided to do Ironman Frankfurt in 2014 (july 6th) because her parents live in Stuttgart, which is an LA-SD type distance, and just over an hour by train. So obviously lodging costs for this event would be drastically decreased, also with the advantage of living in a home not just a hotel room, except a hotel in frankfurt a few days before the race... She was thinking it would be really fun if I went too.
So - I do plan to ask the general peeps for info about that race, racing internationally, etc, I wanted to get your feedback and thoughts, as well as suggestions based on what I had been planning to do below (which was HIM Oceanside, KOM series, then IMLT). What can I keep, what should I chuck, if I were to decide to do this race? I am all ears about all aspects of this whole decision.
Thank you!!!
Ok...
That July 6th IM date is "close enough" to the IMCDA'13 date that you pretty much know what to expect from your Jan-June training, as you did it for IMCDA. Oceanside + the KOM series won't be a problem. Those rides will just serve as your long rides those weeks, just need to be sure to get in your long runs and running frequency.
Assuming that the date for IMLT'14 stays the same, I had our IMLT'13 folks dropping into their plans on July 1 = 12wks out. So...rough math...you'd be starting your IMLT training plan about 8wks out from the race. That's about as close as you put two IM's and expect to improve on the second race.
That said, the big concern is mental burnout. I suspect you'll be pretty crispy by the July 6th event and it will be tough to get back in the IM saddle for those 8wks before IMLT. Very, very few people are able to "enjoy" the training for and racing that second IM unless they are generally greater than 16wks apart. Again, that's highly individual but you know the drill and yourself well enough by now to know what I'm talking about here.
Thanks!!
Hi Rich,
Realized from the title probably not clear who the heck this is: Julia Herrmann here...
Got some big picture questions for prepping for ironman frankfurt and for the IM run. I was reading over the run durability project, and was quite intrigued. I checked the requirements in the outlined plan, and I do meet them. My splits were pretty even on IMCDA bike and run this year, as well as at IMAZ 2010. IMSG was an even bike and then some strangeness on the run - kinda fast and then kinda slow, but I think it coincided with the slight uphills and downhills of the course. I started the first month of run durability in October, and now it's November OS and I wasn't sure if I should stick to the outline in the wiki (do run durability 2 then start outseason) or how to hack it now and how? Then of course I got all chicken about maybe I shouldn't be doing it after all? So here I am, asking.
I am sure you are getting all kinds of people wanting in. Looking at year two and three of the plan from the wiki, I realize I don't yet have a powermeter, but it's something that I have been wanting to get anyway.
My 12 minute marathon miles have just been boggling my mind, because during training my zones seem to fit just right. I can run ~ 9:00/miles if the run is a relatively flat HIM.... I just don't know. If you could tell me what you think, or if I can supply you with more info, do let me know! Thanks for your time!
Hi Julia,
Sorry, so is the question if you should stick with the RD plan or do the OS? Please read this thread on when to start the OS.
Another consideration is that with your base of fitness and your location on SoCal = you train outside all winter and have a ton of 5k, 10k, half marathon opportunities, the Get Faster plan might be a better fit for you than the OS. That is, the nature of Cali is that you could easily get in a ~1:20-30 long run and ~2.5-3hr long ride in all winter and that is more GF-esque vs OS.
Let me know what you think.
Hallloooo!
More season planning questions.
1. Where can I find more info about the 28 day run challenge? What does it look like? Is it something I can do after I finish the get faster program? (set to end on 1/19/14).
Quick recap of the 2014 plan: I am looking to do the surf city half marathon on Feb 2nd, Oceanside 70.3 March 29th, and then Ironman Frankfurt July 6th. (WEE!)
Thanks!! Hope you are having a wonderful holiday!!!
HI!
I am in HIM prep for Oceanside 70.3. Wanted to ask ahead for guidance on the transition for after I am done with Oceanside (Mar 29th) for the IM Frankfurt (July 6th) prep.
Also - I'd like to do the mulholland prelude (preview) that is being held on Mar 8-9. 50 miles or 90 miles as a sneak peak to the challenge that is part of the KOM series on my radar. Of course I'd like to do the 90 miles because it will give me more of the course I'll be doing later. But my normal miles up until that point won't have me doing anything near 90. I've been covering just about 55 miles in 3 hrs recently. Thoughts...?
Thanks!!!
PS - the whole power meter conversation is stalled out a little bit at the moment, because in contrast to many couples where one has to convince the other on the cost of one power meter, we need to figure out how we are going to afford TWO power meters, because if I get one, he is getting one too.
Have a done an SP for you that includes Oceanside to Frankfurt?
Just put on your Big Girl Pants and do the ride, you'll be fine . Maybe come up here a couple weekends and do the usual climbs.
I don't think there is an SP for Oceanside to Frankfurt just yet - if so I think I link would be in the string?
Happy to just do the ride - much simpler that way! (I get squashed in both directions fearing injury - on one side I don't want to kill myself doing a crazy ride with "no" prep, but on the other I don't want to kill myself by adding on volume to the plan as it is!)
So I guess I need to get an SP from you...?
Ok. Can you please complete the Race Survey for me, so I get everything I need from you and it's dropped into my processes back here? Thanks!
Hi Rich! Thanks so much for the screen cast and guidance for Oceanside & Frankfurt. It all makes sense. One more question for you though - in the BWR (4/27/14) and KOM (4/12/14, 5/3/15, 5/17/14) series hilly century rides - how should I approach the scheduled Sunday ABP rides on these weekends?
Thanks!!
Julia
Just take those Sundays off, no need to ride the day after epic rides like that. Goal is to be back on track by Monday.
Hi Coach Rich!
I wanted to get a few suggestions as to how to proceed post race. I just completed Vineman 70.3. I did it on the minimalist plan and was very impressed with the training and how the race went. It was one of my fastest race times which made me very happy given how much I time I had to put into the new job.
I have a nagging knee inflammation that is going to need some attention. I don't have any races on next because I want to heal the knee and see if things stabilize better at my job. Then I will know if I can put an IM on for next year or another 70.3.
I was hoping to get some general guidance on what things I should consider to put on for my training for the time being. I would very much like to keep a solid base level of fitness going forward. Thanks for your thoughts!!
