Brent E's "just du it" macro thread

Hi Rich,

Looking for some macro level guidance for the 2nd half of my short course duathlon racing season. Just submitted a season planning survey with race details.

When we spoke on the phone a couple months ago, you were leaning towards the idea of me loading up the half ironman plan for the remainder of my year. For the past few weeks, I've been "kicking the tires" between the Half Iron, Get Faster and Short Course plans.

After some consideration, the advanced Short Course plan seems to be the best fit IMHO. The VO2 bike work, IP pace running and short course specific race simulations seem to be exactly what I need. I would tack on some volume to the bike workouts as I chase around other members of the Ottawa Sleeper Cell during the weekends.

All that being said, all of the above is just my opinion. You're the season planning guru, so just let me know which plan & week number to do, and I will make it so.

  • Would it be a good idea for me to do an Olympic Distance duathlon two weeks before AmZof? After listening to the Season Planning webinar, I think the answer is no. But I wanted to run it by you here.

    I have my eye on a local duathlon. 9km trail run / 28km hilly bike / 4km road run. Did it last year. Excellent, grassroots, low-key race. Only issue is timing. Two weeks before AmZof is when the second race rehearsal is scheduled.

    Here's my season plan for your reference.

  • Do you really "need" to do the final RR? If you wanted to do it, you could do it 3wks vs 2wks and do that race instead of/in the place of the final RR that week.

    That is, AmZof is a pretty unique race and I'm not sure if a HIM RR is the best solution for you. You're also a very experience duathlete so I'm sure you can figure it out

  • Hey Rich I am dropping into the Get Faster plan on Mon Feb 3. What sort of Saturday bike volume should I be doing? On the one hand, I am approaching my A race AmZof Middle Distance in less than 4 months. On the other hand, I will be doing my Saturday rides on the trainer until April at the earliest, and would like to preserve my sanity.

    Just do the GF volume as scheduled and/or a max of 2hrs on the trainer. 4mo is PLENTY of time to build cycling endurance, no worries.

  • Just want to be 100% clear I understand. This Saturday's ride is scheduled to be 2.5 hrs. MS1: 2 x 15' (4') @ 95-100% + M2: 6 x 1.5'(1.5') @ Vo2.

    25' warmup + 38' min MS1 + 18' MS2 = 81'

    Are you saying I should tack on an extra 39' to make this a 2hr ride?
  • What plan, ability, and week is this, so I can look at it and fix it if required.

  • Get Faster Intermediate Week 2
  • I'm still not clear on how long my ride should be, but I'm inferring 2 hrs. It's Saturday ride go-time, so I hope I'm right!
  • The ride is 2.5hrs.

    Note that Main Set #3 is:

    <style type="text/css">
    p.p1 {margin: 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px; font: 12.0px Calibri}
    </style>

    MS3: Reminder of available ride time at 80-85%/Zone3/Mod-Hard.

    Meaning, you ride the balance of the prescribed 2.5hrs to at Z3 to get the total 2.5hrs.
