Wheelset for IMMT

Hi Coach,

I have a quick question about appropriate wheel selection for racing.  I have been training on a wheel with a PT (cycleops alloy G3), and also have a set of ZIPP 404s with wireless PT.  I noticed a recent post where you strongly recommended racing on the same PT wheel that you train on, so my question is whether I should rent a disk for the wheel I’ve been training on and use the same PT as training/testing, or use the ZIPPs?  Start riding the ZIPPs now?

Thanks for your help.

  • Hi Bill, welcome to the team.

First just a heads up, if you have a question that you only want to be specifically answered by the coaches, post it in your Micro or Macro thread in the Micro or Macro forum, you'll have to create your thread if it is your first post. Coaches will still answer questions in the general forums, like this one, but these posts are also open for everyone in the team to chime in as well.

So with that said, I think Rich's biggest point in the other thread was that if you own a PT wheel, say a standard training wheel with a PT built in, you are much better off to just buy a disc cover for it and use that for racing versus renting a non-power carbon wheel just for race day. Going from power to no power just for some fancy carbon is definitely not worth it.

Given that you already have a set of racing wheels with a PT in them, then I think you should definitely use your 404s for IMMT. You don't need to do every ride on your 404s starting today, but you should do your last power test and your Race Rehearsals on them to make sure there aren't any significant differences in the readings between the two and of course to just give your raceday gear a once-over.
  • FYI, you can get a wheel cover for Zipp 404, just as you can for many other wheels. It's what I race on. In fact I have only one set of wheels, which I use indoors and out, for training and racing, with or without a cover (some races ban disc wheels). Since the Zipp is probably lighter and better in other ways than your other wheels, why not buy a cover for the Zipp rear wheel?
  • Hey Bill,

Did you use a power-meter for Placid or Louisville? If not, I see you did pretty well maybe the disc wheel might be the way to go. But, if you find yourself wanting a disc cover here is a good site to check out... wheelbuilder.com ask for Benny and tell him you're an EN member and he'll hook you up with a discount.
  • You can get a wheel cover here and learn more about them too. http://www.wheelbuilder.com/aerodisc.html
