First IM in 2014 Selection

Hello Team,

I need to make a choice on the first Ironman race. After being 6 years in the sport, 10 Half Ironman races, it is time I take a plunge.

I live in Kansas City area. I prefer time period between June-September. I am not KQ material yet, I will race that race, I am not in just to finish. I am taking convenience of driving or less flying/ time zone changes, simplicity of logistics over any type of course that would like suit my strengths. Louisville is off the table, don't like the area. Some choices come to mind:

IMCDA

IMLP

IMMT

IMWI

Thank you so much for taking the time to give your input.

  • Do CDA at the end of June. It is the early, has mild to variable weather versus HOT Texas and it will same you from Training for IM in the Dog Days of July and August....
  • All those meet your criteria regards to venue quality. They all feature smaller cities or resorts, with lots of close in lodging options and after race vacation options. I agree with Dino, base your choice on when you want to be training. IMMT may have the "easiest" course, but that shouldn't be a criteria for you, you're a very smart racer. All of them should have a lot of ENers present. I forget which one is the designated EN focus race.

I've only done CDA&Wi, both are super locales. Madison has the more enjoyable course IMO, especially the run. But I'm signed up for CDA in 14, it's close and fits my time requirements for the year.
  • Thank you Dino and thank you Al. Dino summed it up as well as you, nice and short. I think I am going to finally meet you Al at 2014 IMCDA. How quickly should I register, I could pull the trigger shortly, just want to hear some more team mates chime in, sharing other angles. Thanks guys.

  • I would register ASAP and find lodging even sooner....
  • I didn't register for CdA until early January. But I still managed to get a hotel 1.5 miles from the start. Earlier the better obviously.
  • Thanks guys, I will work on it ASAP.
