Question on latest HIM Execution Strategy

Coach P,

First, thanks for the new HIM execution strategy.  Are you recommending using nutrition on the course--Powerbar stuff over concentration approach like Infinit?  I thought since the HIM calls for greater intensity the less solid food the better but it looks like you all are encouraging 1) utilize course nutrition proofed in training 2) incorporate informed eating 3) ensure proper sodium levels.  Also, I see that you qualify the solid food for younger athletes.  For us forty something athletes ;-) would you encourage all fluid nutrition?

Thanks Coach P!

Tony

  • Coach P,

Also, I noticed last week with my FTP test a twinge below and on the interior of my right knee.  I have been icing and doing ibuprofen since then.  The long bike rides on Saturday and Sunday were fine this weekend.  This morning's run the interior side of the lower knee was hurting so I didn't do my tempo and interval work.  I was able to get a walk in appointment.  The doctor said it is my medial ligament.  He checked the movement against my left leg and noticed some laxness in the right.  He believes it is not torn but just strained.  He prescribed Indomethacin and reducing the running down 50%.  If it should persist, we then will do an MRI.  How then should I proceed with the run workouts for at least ten days?

    Thanks Coach P,

    Tony

  • Yes on course nutrition for ease, simplicity and accessibility. Alternate fuel only if the baseline doesn't work...solids or not, that's a personal choice...more liquid is up to you (works for some, not for you).

I would cut runs down to 30 mins, 3 x a week...nothing hard, just keep it rolling. Maybe check in on www.athletestreatingathletes.com to see if theres anything lese that's tight that's causing additional strain on that ligament?

  • Coach P,

Thank you your previous message Coach P.  I have two questions related to coming weeks for training/racing.

First I have an Ollympic Race scheduled on 8/4 Sunday the week following a RR during my week 15 HIM,   Coach R had recommend that I get in my long run that week (Thursday), swim was optional and light if any biking on Saturday--perhaps course recon then Sunday race.  What do you think?

Should I still do RR for week prior (week 14) even though I am doing an Olympic Race the following week?

Also, I will wait to see the progress on my strained MCL then make the call on how to approach the Oly race 1)  I figure I could swim, bike, and light run to finish 2) If it's still feeling a bit painful, I could skip run altogether.   I guess we will see as I progress into next week.

BTW, the 60' bike interval followed with a 25' brick felt great today.  MCL was not an issue although I could still feel a bit of stiffness initially which confirms grade 1 strain as suspected by doctor.  Keeping fingers crossed!

    Thanks again!

    Tony

  • Tony, you are welcome. I think that the RR is more important than the Oly performance, especially focusing on nutrition, pacing, etc. The long run of OLY week should be approached with caution as you are still on the road to recovery, but otherwise the plan seems great!!!
