Short course ?s

In week 12; starting to feel a bit beat up from the running and the speed work.  Could be the heat; could be just getting beat up from the speed work.  8 weeks left till A race.  (For example, legs still dead from sunday and sore on today's run--75 minutes can be a long time).  Today was 30 min (which I ran this AM) and tonight is going to be 2x20 on the trainer.  (The heat outside is just ridiculous).  Tomorrow is a swim (which should be OK) and 3x1mi @ 5k test pace.  I also noticed there ain't much difference between INT and ADV in the SC plans.  Next week is a test week.  Anyone who's been through this want to chime in?

  • I just finished short course. My legs couldn't handle all of it. I ended up doing the wednesday runs on the treadmill to avoid the heat and make the intervals. I did the long runs as prescribed and then did the other two runs easy just to log the time. I couldn't handle more than Z1 ish on those runs without being extremely sore and tired all the time
  • That makes sense. This is starting to feel like the OS on steroids and I'm a little worried about injury. Maybe dial the intervals back to Z3 or Z4. (I can't do z1 on the 'mill. It just drives me nuts.). I'm hoping to see a BOOM soon. Feels like I'm starting to earn it.

This week it's going to be all inside except for what I can get done between 6 and 7 or 8 am. Heat index today going to be 105. Tomorrow hotter. I'll take the cold any day.
  • It's a fun training plan I thought but it's tough and will make you faster. I enjoyed the fast intervals in a sick twisted way
  • I am on SC Adv. week 20, there have been maybe 2 weeks that I could complete as written and than having to back off to recover or keep scaling back the workouts until I could recover. They are brutal and need a lot of modifying for me. 42 years old with Oly PB 2:16.

  • Agree the heat is a bear today 105 index. The heat just wears you out. You could go to the GYM and enjoy the AC for your run, as I did yesterday. You could also do half your run outside, if you feel like the treadmill is hurting you, and do half your run inside.
Cutting something for an extra 1-2 hours of sleep a week helps out too. If you so beat up and can't perform or perform sub-par to what you know you can and the fatigue is winning dial down some catch your wind.
  • Did the gym today and hit targets (close enough) but there was very little air circulation; headed for the pool this evening for an hour. Serously, you should have seen that treadmill. I laughed when I looked down at it. I am really beginning to wonder what I might be able to do on a 60 degree october day.

The SC plan is brutal. If I can finish it, I will be in the best shape of my life since my senior year of college. That now seems achievable, as I was 15lbs less then. Getting very fired up for my A event.
  • I ran 5 minutes faster than my best olympic run on this plan and in that run I "blew up" in the last mile and lost a minute and a half. You'll have a lot of speed in the legs come race day
