  • as I understand it, the latest thinking on skin wounds is to NOT use topical antibiotics.    fosters resistant critters.   etc.     Neosporin especially is known for a high percentage of folks being allergic to it.     Rian, might have been the Vaseline base that was helping the healing for you.      Keeping wounds moist (and clean) with something is useful.
  • Tegaderm Tegaderm Tegaderm!
  • I can't say enough good stuff about Tegaderm. In the past I recovered from some road rash using Tegaderm and within two weeks the would was pretty much gone.

It mght be hard to find because it's under the 3M brand Nexcare now. Look for Nexcare on the shelf then Tegaderm printed underneath that.

It's a clear X x X (there are a bunch of sizes - 4 x 4 worked great for my thigh) thin adhesive "skin". You need to carefully place it over the wound using precautions (cleaned hands and wound, etc.). It kind of looks like you have Saran wrap over the wound. I changed it four times over two weeks. Either because at first the wound was leaking a bit while i was running, later because the edged of the dressing were coming up a bit, but it's meant to stay on. Once on, the dressing helps accelerate body's ability heal the wound without a scab so you are left with new pink skin underneath.

And the directions for Tegaderm say not to, but I put a micro thin layer of bacitracin just over the actual wound (none on the surrounding area) when I change the dressing.
  • I totally agree with Cary about Tegaderm. I am using it on the area where I have the most and worst road rash. It is healing much better than the other areas where I didn't use it. I love how it doesn't produce a scab.
  • Hey!!!! Nice job on the picture posting!!! Hope you heal up quick!!!

...and am I the only one that didn't know you are (were?) a climber??

  • Wow... I read you had fell during a ride and this posted lessons learned is awesome thanks for sharing.

Work your recovery plan like you train and you should be fine have patience with yourself.
  • Dang, Tim ... I'm so sorry to hear about this. Time to heal up and return stronger and rebuilt for Kona and FL!

Surprised the bike was unharmed. Those Craft shorts are the bomb, btw ... it's a pity they stopped making the elite tri pad.
  • Tim, sorry to hear about it. Sending mojo for a fast recovery!
  • Tim-
I am just catching up with the Forums. I am very sorry to hear about your crash but glad you are okay. Heal fast my friend and get back at it.
  • Agh, sorry hear this Tim. Wishing you a speedy recovery.
  • Wow. Tough luck. I'm sorry to hear about the accident. Thank goodness it wasn't any worse than a broken clavicle. Bad, but your skull is still in one piece, and that's the body part I worry about most. Not much in mine, but it's all I've got!

    Get well soon.

  • Let the healing begin!

  • Great data and details Tim. Looks like recovery is a "Go". Heal up and we'll see you on the other side.
  • You did request Titanium right? They don't make them out of carbon fiber, yet. Let the healing begin.
  • I asked (after the fact) if mine was Titanium, and they told me stainless steel. :-(
  • Al- you took the words out of my mouth!!!

    Let the healing begin!
  • How much extra weight is all that stainless steel and/or titanium? You may have to go on a diet to compensate! image
  • some pretty colors still after 2 weeks after impact

the scar from surgery 1 week after

  • Wow! Healing nicely.
  • Way to start healing.

I will repeat something someone yelled at me, from a car, while i was running without a shirt :::: "damn man, eat a cheeseburgerr". image
  • follow up photo's 8 days after surgery..... I'm on my way!

  • Tim - looks like you had a great surgeon. It's just amazing what they can do. Keep a tight hold on the reigns right now, you don't want to hurt yourself coming back too quickly. Easy does it for another week...then slowly open the throttle.
  • Great to hear about the progress.  The pictures look good also but I don't know much about x ray's so...

  • Hey Tim - just catching up on a lot of forum stuff - wow - this is too bad. But it looks like your on your way to recovery. Well, at least it forced you to cut down your IM schedule by one - you beast. Your race schedule will certainly keep you motivated - just don't get anxious.

B/t/w - I broke my clavicle when I was like 9 yrs old by a friend practicing his martial arts routine on me - so I am not looking to experience that again via my bike ...eyes ahead at all times.....lol.
  • Tim, glad to see a smile on your face. You must be feeling better! Glad the healing is going well.
