Competing with Tim: A crash report by coach Patrick

When I got the message the other day from Tim about his crash, I felt pretty bad. As many of you know he's so competitive and his goals for himself and his year are very aggressive. That's just the way he rolls.   I thought the nice thing would be to call to let him know that the team stands behind him.

But then I quickly realized that Tim was doing something far more sinister.  Not content with Kona, it's clear that he's actually mounting an attack in a desperate attempt to dethrone me as the official crash king of endurance nation.

I knew I had to act quickly, in order to make things right in the world.

  • Well it would be my honor to give you the throne.... Things happen in 3's first Teri, then me, now coach P.... Thats it were done with EN crashes for a while...

The volume didnt work for me on the video!
  • no volume for me either but I'm sure we'll hear about in long detail at LP.
    Heal up you guys.
  • No sound here either, but I'm guessing broken arm? Hope you recover quickly.  Peeps, be careful out there!

  • Man, no volume! Be careful you guys!!!!
  • You are killing us P! Need new video (assuming you are OK and not on major pain meds).
  • Hey Patrick. Very sorry to see you with your arm like that, and hope that you are feeling better soon.

  • Holy Shite Coach P!!! Sorry to hear you couldn't keep the rubber side down. Heal quick.
  • I think Nemo got it right. The meds made him think he was making sounds but he was really just moving his lips.
  • Wow, sorry about your crash. Heal up quick P!

Maybe we need a set of official EN training wheels for the king of the crashes?

  • Get fixed up.       Kona still?
  • This is a club I don't want to join unless somehow a broken collarbone is correlated with KQ type people...is that the ticket? image Meanwhile, I hope both of you heal up nicely!

It seems like we start crashing/getting injured *after* we get thru the KQ barrier. Dont know what that means ... Maybe we start getting too cocky, or its just a function of miles in the saddle?
  • Sorry to ruin the curve, but collar bone got busted last year and I'm nowhere near KQ'ing! Only thru attrition for the next 30 eyes will I make that via qualification!
  • Okay folks, time for a quick update. Looks like I did a great job raising my collarbone at the distal end (and tearing a bunch of ligaments).

There's no way it'll come back together on its own, so its surgery for me on July 31. I'll be under the weather for a bit and him some serious pain meds, but I will still be here. So it looks like serious downtime through the end of August.

Then I will have 8 weeks to get ready for Florida. Should be an interesting test. :-)

For those of you asking, I was not going up, this year. As many of you probably remember, I actually have to qualify to go there. :-) I have been enjoying my summer so far, or rather, HAD been enjoying my summer until Saturday.

Thanks for all your support, and stay tuned for more updates!
  • Coach P,

Thanks for the update. Been on the edge of my seat waiting for the story and hoping it would be "not that bad" .... Sounds like it is and that is a major bummer... I hear your pain comments since I have just about had enough.... Don't worry , you can have the title , we'll be back , and we will be a force to be reckoned with by the time IMFL gets here.... Surgery in the AM for me!

    Tim,
  • Oh my, now we have a whole new Challenge! The Tim vs Patrick shoulder surgery/recovery/IMFL challenge. I think I'll sit this one out! Good luck you two!
  • @Nemo....Oh no NOT Tim vs. Patrick but the Team of Tim and Patrick.... I can almost hear Rocky music!
  • Oh man, that sounds painful. Heal up coach, and best of luck with surgery!
  • D'oh, d'oh, d'oh!!!

In normal circumstances I'd suggest Tim and Coah P arm-wrestle for the Crash King title.  But with the broken collarbones and pain meds and all.... maybe some other contest?  Who can poop first off the pain meds?  Who is the most/least irritating to their spouses in recovery?  Who doesn't pull their own stitches?

Seriously guys, be well and keep it SAFE out there!

  • P - Sorry to see this - but you know you'll be back...

Related - if you start to have any nerve issues in your shoulder - ie like a blocked nerves and or your shoulder muscles are not working properly, let me know. I had these issues when I broke my collar bone (came to light about 4 months after my crash when I still couldn't move my shoulder well) and have done a ton of research and know the top physicians in the country. Hopefully you won't have this issue - your x-ray looked like a pretty clean break...

Enjoy your recovery and hope you still make it out to IMWis....
  • I feel your pain Coach P. very sorry to hear about and wish you a fast recovery.
  • Same to Tim. Just hearing about all this. Wish you well!
  • Thnks folks! Tim, I am down with a Rocky theme song!!!!
  • Oh no, coach P! I've just checked in after some time out post marathon and seen the news! Horrid! Hope it heals super-swiftly.
  • Is that the same arm as the previous busted elbow Coach P? Your gonna start leaning to one side you know...lol
Rest up and come back stronger!
