Garmin 910xt pre race stress

IMLP coming up Sunday and I'm praying my 910xt works.  Bought a brand new one in Feb this year and sent it back about a month ago for a bunch of crazy stuff it was doing.  They sent me a refurb that worked fine up until last night.  I did a pool workout, set the watch to pool swim>25meters>start and put my head down and started stroking.  30 mins later look at the watch and the time is right but NO @#$%^ng DISTANCE.  Coincidentally, I get an email from Garmin this morning that says its time to update my software on the watch.  I am a little stressed about doing this before Placid,

Anyone else have this issue?  What do you guys think?

Oh, and at Quassy, my HR strap didn't work.  How did I know?  At mile 26 on Rt. 109 my HR was 38.  I'm kinda fit but no Bruce Lee (got a free replacement strap, but not the sending unit)  Seems to work now but getting uneasy.

Thanks

  • @Ken

I just did a warranty replacement on my 910xt yesterday (7/22) and for $12 they are sending me the replacement overnight for afternoon delivery which I should receive today.  Originally they quoted me the shipping would case $28.  First check the firmware version on your watch and if it needs to upgraded go to 2.8.  Do a quick test and see if it solves your problem.  If you have enough time you can always do another warranty replacement but I would ask them to absorb the shipping the second time around.

  • I have a 310XT and was worried about the same things a couple of weeks ago for my 70.3 race. My Garmin ended up working fine, but I brought along my old polar just in case. That would have given me at least HR on the run. I have a Garmin Edge 500 I use on the bike, and it is always solid - so I wasn't worried about the run.
  • Before CdA the OWS issue surfaced with the 910. I'd go ahead and upgrade the firmware. You can always manually rotate through each leg and use it for leg time. I did this, and while you can't see total time, it also helps to distract you from thinking about total time.
